Public Meeting About Community Rec Center Fills City Hall Auditorium

KWBG 09/17/19

BOONE, Iowa—Boone Mayor John Slight had called for a public meeting to involve the residents in the on going discussion about a possible community rec center for Boone County.  Interest in a project has increased with the pending closure of the Boone County Family YMCA by the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and it showed as a standing room only crowd filled the Boone City Hall Auditorium.

A voluntary committee has been working on the feasibility of a possible project.  The committee includes three members of the Boone City Council, a member from the Ogden City Council, representatives from the Boone County Family “Y” Board including the head of that board Linda Williamson and DMACC Provost Drew Nelson.

The group presented some of their preliminary information to community members, but emphasized that it’s very early in the process and any details like location, exact cost, services and so on are just not available.

Boone Mayor John Slight, on KWBG Tuesday morning said so much more work is needed.  He said he expects to call for another public meeting in the future to keep residents involved with the process.  Slight said the majority attending Monday’s public meeting were supportive of a project and were certainly supporting the inclusion of a swimming pool.
