DES MOINES, Iowa—The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for a large portion of Iowa for Friday evening until Saturday morning.
URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Des Moines IA 402 AM CDT Thu Oct 10 2019 ...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING... * WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 possible. * WHERE...Most of Iowa. * WHEN...From Friday evening through Saturday morning. * IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...For Saturday morning... expected wind speeds of 10 to 20 mph will drop wind chill values to the mid teens to low 20s across much of Iowa... especially northern Iowa. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.![]()
