School District Presents Plan to City Council

KWBG 05/19/20

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee had seen much of the proposed Boone School District Concept for an Early Childhood Center prior to Monday’s Boone City Council Meeting, but Monday night was the first time the full Council had an opportunity to hear from the district.  Eric Beron, Architect with the DLR Group presented the school district’s project, but emphasized that nothing had been finalized.  He repeatedly noted that what the school district is considering will require city involvement, particularly for streets and infrastructure.  The city would need to be involved because if the school draws additional development, especially residential development, it will require additional roads, water and both sanitary and storm sewers.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Manard told the Council that the school board is planning a special meeting on the 26th and would be considering formal action to purchase the property.  The district has been saving for just such a purchase for the past couple of years.  Any sort of project would require a bond issue, originally planned for this September, but that is uncertain with the given coronavirus pandemic.

Boone Mayor John Slight said on the KWBG Tuned In program that the city is interested in retaining the services of a planner, and will make a proposal to the school district to share the cost of that service.
