On Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health identified 321 new cases of coronavirus in our state, a sharp decrease from the 1,175 COVID-19 cases reported on Friday plus the Fourth of July. Iowa has now had nearly 31,500 cases of coronavirus, which have resulted in 721 deaths: 3 in Friday’s update, 1 on Independence Day, but none on Sunday. Since 5:00 on Thursday afternoon in central Iowa, 250 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Polk County – along with 1 death – for a total of 6,517, 46 in Dallas for 1,269, 45 in Webster for 215, 19 in Story for 766, 1 in Hamilton for 188, 1 as well in Greene for 29, and 6 in Boone County for 148 overall. Statewide, there are 141 patients currently hospitalized for COVID-19, an increase of 7 from Saturday, but over 24,500 Iowans have recovered, including 121 in Boone County. For the 1 in 10 Iowans who have been tested for coronavirus, the infection rate has dropped again, to 9.4%.
