MADRID, Iowa—The Iowa Arboretum & Gardens experienced the derecho storm that impacted much of the Midwest Monday. Winds gusting over 80-miles per hour whipped through the Arboretum and caused damage to over 200 trees on the main campus. According to a release from Mark Schneider, Executive Director of the Iowa Arboretum, over 133 specimen trees have to be removed from the grounds. He says the Arboretum is now closed as the staff and volunteers start the long and arduous job of cleaning up and restoring the grounds and woodland trails.
Schneider noted that a donation page has been created on the Arboretum’s website for contributions to help “releaf” the grounds and gardens https://iowaarboretum.org/storm-relief-donation/. Schneider notes that every donation counts as work is done to restore the Arboretum for everyone to enjoy again.
The Iowa Arboretum and Gardens is located on 160 acres near Madrid. The Arboretum was established in 1968 as a nonprofit organization and has a mission of providing educational and outdoor recreational opportunities to all Iowans.
