Numbers streak in the wrong direction

For the ninth day in a row, the Iowa Department of Public Health has identified more than 4,000 new cases of COVID-19.  On Sunday, the department reported 4,432 positive coronavirus tests, meaning almost 185,000 Iowans have contracted COVID-19 and 1,985 have died of coronavirus:  25 on Saturday, including four in Webster County and two from Polk County, and 13 in Sunday’s update.  Since 4:00 on Friday afternoon in central Iowa, 967 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Polk County for a total of 27,472; 184 in Story for 5,506; 161 in Dallas for 5,231; 89 in Webster for 2,877 there; 32 in Hamilton for 756; 27 in Greene for 397; and 43 in Boone County this weekend for 1,074 overall.  Of greater concern:  For the twenty-first consecutive day, there is record number of patients hospitalized in our state for coronavirus – 1,279.  Now nearly 108,000 Iowans have recovered, 662 in Boone County alone, but for the one in three people who have been tested for COVID-19, the infection rate jumped a full two percentage points this past week, to 16.8%.
