January thaw for COVID numbers

On Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 847 new cases of COVID-19, a decrease of 521 in the last twenty-four hours, but pushing the pandemic total to well over 312,000.  Nine deaths were attributed to coronavirus on Saturday – including one in Polk County – and there was one additional death on Sunday, meaning 4,488 Iowans have succumbed to COVID-19.  Since 3:00 on Friday afternoon in central Iowa, 367 new cases of coronavirus have been identified in Polk County; 49 in Dallas; 43 in Story; seven in Webster; just five in Hamilton; none in Greene; and a dozen this weekend in Boone County for 2,228 all told.  382 Iowans are now hospitalized with COVID-19, a drop of 37 from Saturday and more than 274,000 have recovered, including 1,822 in Boone County, where the fourteen-day positivity rate has dropped below double digits to 9%.
