Clear Vents and Gas Meters of Excess Snow

Posted on 27 January 2021 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone Fire Department reported answering a carbon monoxide call Tuesday and did discover a high level of carbon monoxide in the residence.  The cause was found to be snow covering the vents for furnace and water heater.  The department recommends that residents check those vents and make sure they’re not covered and also take a moment to check you gas meter and make sure it’s also not covered with snow or ice.  If there is a snow and ice accumulation, take a brush or broom and sweep the snow away.

Fire fighters were also out clearing snow from fire hydrants and recommend residents check the hydrant nearest their residence and make sure they are cleared in case of an emergency.  If the hydrant is buried and you’re unable to get it cleared, let the fire department know it’s location.  When time permits, on duty fire fighters do check hydrants.
