Boone County Grain Bin Rescue

KWBG 03/05/21

BOONE, Iowa—KWBG News reported last Tuesday morning that the Boone Fire Department and multiple additional agencies had been involved in the successful rescue of a Boone County farmer that had become trapped in a grain bin.  Wednesday on the KWBG News and Public Affairs Program “Tuned In” Sgt. Dallas Wingate, Deputy with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, described how well the county’s new radio system worked during the multi-agency rescue event and described the work process in the Boone County Communications Center.

Boone Fire Chief Justin Adams has released additional details of the rescue:

The Boone Fire Department was called to the 1300 block of 130th St. north of Boone Monday afternoon 3/1/2021 shortly before 5pm for a subject trapped in a grain bin. When firefighters arrived on scene they found a male victim trapped in grain and by auger equipment. The farmer was being attended to by a family member upon arrival. The victim had been in the grain bin for approximately 2 hours prior to the victim being discovered.

Firefighters used their grain rescue tube and associated equipment along with a grain vacuum provided by a local farmer to remove the grain from around the victim and free him. Once the victim was freed he was transported to the Boone County Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. As part of standard protocols Life Flight helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Firefighters were on scene for approximately 1 hour 25 minutes.

The Boone Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Boone County Communications Center, Boone County Hospital, Boone County Sheriff’s Department, Life Flight Air Ambulance, and local farmers.

Boone County records show the farm is owned by Tom and Donna Johnson.  There has been no update on the condition of the individual that had been trapped.
