Emergency Management Announces Safety Measures For Heat

BOONE, Iowa—Boone County Emergency Management Coordinator Lance Kooiker today released information for the public to help deal with heat.

In anticipation of high temperatures over the next few days in Boone County, Iowa. These cities are providing cooling centers for area residents:

City of Boone will have the Auditorium at City Hall open for those citizens needing some relief from the heat. The hours will be Tuesday July 27th, 2021 from 12pm until 5pm and Wednesday July 28th, 2021 from 8-5pm.

City of Madrid you can go to City Hall and they will open the Madrid Community Room on Tuesday July 27th, 2021 or Wednesday July 28th, 2021, 8:30am to 5:00pm.

City of Ogden will have the City Hall open for those citizens needing some relief from the heat. The hours will be Tuesday July 27th, 2021 from 12pm until 5pm and Wednesday July 28th, 2021 from 8-5pm.

If you are under an extreme heat warning

  • Find air conditioning.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Watch for heat illness.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Check on family members and neighbors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.

How to stay safe when extreme heat threatens

  • Find places in your community where you can go to get cool.
  • Keep your home cool by doing the following:
    • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
    • Weather-strip doors and windows.
    • Use window reflectors, such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
    • Add insulation to keep the heat out.
    • Use attic fans to clear hot air.
    • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
