BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for Erva Lunette Cox Huffman Hutchings, who went into the arms of her heavenly Father on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, IA at the age of 88 years. A Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at the Gutterridge Shelter located at 410 Park Avenue in Boone, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor David Swinton Officiating. A private family burial will take place at Greenbrier Cemetery in Greene County, Iowa.
Erva Lu was born on March 14, 1933 to Ervin and Bernice Delaplain Cox in Madison County, Iowa.
She attended schools in several counties and graduated from Bagley High School in 1950. Also in 1950, she married LaVerne Huffman. They had 3 children: David, Rheanne, and Lynnette. They lived in Perry during the 16 years they were married. LaVerne was killed in December of 1966, in a helicopter crash.
While in Perry, she was busy with their church, the Christian Church, and the Ladies Society of the B of L F & E, where she was the secretary at the time of the ending of the lodge. She had taught Sunday school and was a counselor at the Bible Camp at Lake Aquabie. They also would go to the various military schools with LaVerne.
Following LaVerne’s death, Erva Lu moved her family to Boone, first living in town for a year and a half, then moving to an acreage northwest of town, where they lived for 33 years.
In 1975, Erva Lu married Edward Hutchings at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They had 12 wonderful years. Even though Ed worked, they traveled the lower 48 states on their vacations. In 1987, Erva Lu started working at the Principal Financial Group as a mail clerk in the Individual Annuity Administration. She retired in 1995. Edward had passed away in 1988.
Erva Lu was an ardent bowler, belonging to several leagues, traveling tournaments, whether they were local or National, and served as secretary to several leagues. She was district manager of the Farm Bureau Bowling Tournament and in 2003 she was inducted into the WIBC Hall of Fame.
After her retirement, Erva Lu worked with her church, The First United Methodist, in circles, The United Methodist Women, and The Church Women United. She served as president of the UMW in 1999-2000 and 2007-2008.
In 2002, she moved into Boone, where she lived until her death.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, an infant sister, brother, Sid Cox, a step-sister, and a step-son. She is survived by her son, David Huffman of Boxholm, IA; her daughters: Rheanne Thies and Lynnette (Mark) McPherson both of Boone, IA; two step-sons: Phillip and Kenny both of Colorado; 4 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; 6 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law: Linda Cox and Beth Hutchings; 2 brothers-in-law: Robert (Joyce) and Arthur (AnnMarie) Hutchings; nieces; nephews; and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family to use at their discretion.
