Vernon “Vern” Royce Millard

BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for Vernon “Vern” Royce Millard, 69, of Boone, Iowa, formerly of Jefferson, Iowa and Glenrock, Wyoming. He passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Vern was born on July 12, 1952 in Jefferson, Iowa, to Charles and Mary (Galvin) Millard. The 3rd of 4 children. He attended the Jefferson School System, graduating in the Class of 1971. Later attending The Denison Job Corps, graduating with a certification in welding.

He married Rose Tilley in 1973, from this union produced two daughters, Tina and Lana. The couple later divorced in 1978.

In 1980, he began dating Pamela Elliott. Later making her his life partner and wife in 1986 from which this union produced two sons, Jason and Mark.

In Vernon’s younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially Wyoming antelope and the big flathead catfish of Iowa. He loved spending time with his kids and teaching them things he learned from his parents and telling stories of his younger years. He loved making people laugh. Later in life, he was an avid karaoke junkie and he went everywhere to sing a song and cause a smile. He was quite the character.

He enjoyed being a dad, loved being a grandpa, but his greatest accomplishment was being a papa!

Throughout his life he was a laborer, dabbling in concrete and construction until he found his calling as a welder even lending a hand in servicing his country by building tanks during Desert Storm, though he was never in the military. He was last employed by the City of Boone, Linwood Park Cemetery division from 1998 until his retirement in 2016 as a groundskeeper.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Judith and Wesley Elliott Sr.; and brother-in-law, Larry Richardson.

Vernon is survived by his life partner and wife of 41 years, Pamela “Pam” Millard of Boone; daughters, Tina (Gaylon) High of Blackfoot, ID and Lana (Rob) Lipe of Mary Esther, FL; sons, Jason (Shiena) Millard of Boone and Mark and his significant other, Danielle Mayfield of Pilot Mound; brothers, David and Roger Millard of Jefferson; sister, Barb Richardson of Boone; 19 grandchildren, Chris, Nancy (Colten), David (Tiffany), Lisa (DJ), Ambria, Brianna, Gabriel, Destiny, Charles, Kaylie, Sylis, Evannah, Devaney, Izabelle, Chance, Mya, Jaycob, Jeremy, Aubrey; 7 great grandchildren, Blakely, Stryker, Ava, Aspen, Corbyn, Indie and Ashlyn; and numerous extended family, cousins and friends.

He never met a stranger he couldn’t make smile.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel. Face masks are required for all services. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Vernon Millard Family.
