AMES, Iowa—Phyllis LaVonne (Nelson) Pevestorf, age 89 of Ames and formerly of Stratford, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at the Israel Family Hospice House.
Born on May 7, 1933 in Carroll County, the third daughter of Arthur and Golda (Van Raden) Nelson. She attended country school through 7th grade then attended Coon Rapids Schools until graduating in 1950.
Following high school, she worked in Coon Rapids until she was united in marriage with Darwin “Dean” Pevestorf on January 27, 1951. The couple started their life in Nevada, IA where Dean farmed. In December of 1952, Dean entered the Army and served his time on the front lines in Korea while Phyllis was living in Jefferson until his return.
When Dean returned from the service, the couple started farming in Nevada again. Dean and Phyllis were blessed with three children Vickie Dawn, Pamela Jo and Brent E. In March of 1967, Dean and Phyllis purchased a farm near Stratford, where the children graduated.
She was active in Rural Garden Club and Women’s Fellowship in Nevada, along with teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir and being a 4H leader for several years. She was a member of South Marion Methodist Church in Stratford.
Phyllis enjoyed keeping a neat home and was proud to keep the farm yard free of weeds and all the white fences painted. Dean and Phyllis enjoyed square dancing for over 50 years and belonged to a square-dancing camping group. For over 30 years, they camped at the Iowa State Fair and several years at the Spencer Fair. Many winters were spent in Texas, making new friends, enjoying card games and finding new places to eat.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean of 67 years; sister in infancy, Dorothy Marie; sister and brother-in-law, Norma (John C.) Wright; nephew, Rodney Kent Wright; in-laws, Joe and Grace Pevestorf; brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren Pevestorf, Byron and Charlotte Hobart and Clarence “Hap” and Ruby Springer.
She is survived by her children and daughter-in-law, Vickie Carter, Pamela Jo Hasstedt and Brent and Liz (Williams) Pevestorf; granddaughters, Karisa (Stacy) Brown, Lindsey Carter, Tiffany (Derick) Anderson, Krystal (Andrew) Jay, Ashley (Ben) Lorenzen and Jessica (Curtis) Johnson; great grandchildren, Brennan, Hunter and McKenna Brown, Tristynn Leon, Rylie Reese, Avery and Briege Jay, Briar, Brogan and Beckett Lorenzen, Eastynn Hecht and Aubree and Hadlee Johnson.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, June 3, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. A Private Family Service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Inurnment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames or the Iowa Chapter of the American Heart Association.
