AMES, Iowa—David Jack Knippel, age 70 of Ames, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Northridge Village in Ames.
David was born on July 24, 1951 in Oshkosh, WI, the son of Darwin Jack and Odell (Ehricke) Knippel. He graduated from Oshkosh, WI High School in 1969 and continued his education at an electronic school in Des Moines, IA.
David was taking organ lessons at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames where he met Susan Olson. They later started dating after they continued lessons and performed at a festival together. David was united in marriage with Susan on August 13, 1977 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone.
David was recruited by WOI AM/FM Radio, where he ended up as Chief Engineer and retired in 2016 after 44 years. David graduated from Iowa State University with an Organ Performance degree.
David was a member of First United Methodist Church in Boone where he was the church organist for 40+ years, also a member of the American Guild of Organists, Amateur Radio and Broadcast Engineers.
David and Susan loved to travel and take cruises. They made their way to Norway and Germany, cruised the Caribbean and Mississippi River. The Knippel Family used to make a yearly trip to Hayward, WI around the Fourth of July and had a condo in Clear Lake, IA.
David was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Sandy. He was survived by his wife, Susan of Ames; sons, Daniel (Kayla) Knippel and their son Connor Ash of Ellsworth and Eric Knippel of Huxley; siblings, Kristine Nicholson and Robert (Naomi) Knippel, both of Oshkosh, WI; sister-in-law, Audrey (Jack) Knight of Boone; along with several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M on Friday, June 17, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Visitation will be held following the memorial service from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Inurnment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake, IA at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to First United Methodist Church in Boone or Northridge Village in Ames.
