Bruce Harris

BOONE, Iowa—Bruce Sydney Harris, age 89 of Des Moines and formerly of Boone, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Kennybrook Village in Grimes.

Bruce was born to Clint Sydney and Vernetta E. (Tobolt) Harris on December 5, 1932 in Boone. He graduated from Boone High School.

Bruce was united in marriage with June Marie Buchmiller on March 8, 1958 in Boone. They lived in Boone for 50 years before moving to Des Moines to be closer to their son and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband and care provider to June for several years prior to her passing in 2015.

Bruce worked at Iowa Electric in Boone for 30 years. He started as an appliance repairman and later worked as a gas and electrical technician. He also proudly served in the Iowa National Guard for 43 years. He started as an enlisted man and eventually went to OCS to receive his commission and culminated his career as a Warrant Officer CW4. He retired in 1993 after thousands of hours of flying helicopters and airplanes, multiple types and classifications.

Bruce was an avid Ham Radio operator and a leader within MARS (Military Auxiliary Radio System). He also enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting old friends and acquaintances in Boone, and volunteering at the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge. Occasionally, he would also find time to enjoy flying his son’s airplane with him.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and his wife June. He is survived by Brent (Brenda) Harris of Urbandale; grandchildren, Nathan (Alexa) Harris and Danielle (Wyatt) Sann; great grandchildren, Violet and Oliver Harris and Genesis and Bridger Sann; and his brother, Robert Harris of Scottsdale, AZ.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until time of service. The service may be viewed on Bruce’s Tribute Wall on the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel website. Military Honors will be conducted by the Iowa National Guard at the Veterans Monument in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Inurnment will be at a later date in Boone Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge.
