AMES, Iowa—Norma Ness Aspengren, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, from a sudden and brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones.
Just a month ago the family all gathered to celebrate her 80th birthday in grand style gathering pictures and memories that will forever be treasured.
Norma was the oldest of 5 siblings, all of whom she loved dearly. She was a farm girl to her core, loved the outdoors and Norwegian food. Norma played a huge role in the farm family of the 50s, helping take care of her younger siblings, helping in the field, in the barn, and walking those beans. Norma graduated from Ballard High School in 1960, where she and some of her best friends led their basketball team to the state tournament. She was a formidable guard.
Norma went on to have 4 wonderful children who then continued the clan with their own children. Norma also deeply loved her step children and step grandchildren who enriched her life in countless ways. This tribe of children and grandchildren will continue her legacy of rich traditions, thankfulness in the little things, and love without judgements.
During her working career, Norma was the administrative assistant in the purchasing department at Iowa State University. After that, she worked as a legal secretary, with the purpose of wanting to assist grandchildren with their college education needs. She was fiercely proud of every one of them.
Due to the unpredictability of the weather and winter roads, the family has decided to postpone the celebration of life until the spring. The date of the celebration will be posted on social media and the Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home webpage.
The family would like to thank, Mary Greeley Medical Center – Intensive Care Unit Staff, for their willingness to allow all of her family, who were present to be at her side at the end of her time on this earth.
All cards of sympathy can be sent in care of Julie Kline, 2920 Wessex Drive, Apt. 280, Ames Iowa 50014.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for Norma’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com.
