BOONE, Iowa—Patricia Mallas, age 93 of Boone, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023 in Independence, MO.

Patricia Jean Larrew was born on September 11, 1929 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter Theodore and Bessie Mae Larrew. Patty graduated from Boone High School in 1947 and Boone Junior College while employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone. She attended the University of Northern Iowa.

Patricia was united in marriage with Jay L. Mallas on August 15, 1948 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Boone. They welcomed five children, Launie Jean, Terrie Lynn, John Theodore, Andrew Jay and Michael Warren.

Patricia began working with Illinois Bell Telephone as a long-distance operator in 1969 and transferred to Ames in 1970, where she continued as an operator and a supervisor. Patricia had an additional job assisting Jay with building homes in Boone. In the early 1980s, Patricia and Jay incorporated Unicorn Agri Services into their already hectic schedule. They owned a detasseling business for over 19 years. Patty’s title being chief-field supervisor. In 1986, Patricia retired from Northwestern Bell in Ankeny.

Patricia was in the color guard for the Scotties and traveled to Boston with them- Such a wonderful life experience for her! Patricia was a lifetime supporter of veterans and was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she held the position of Sergeant of Arms. She thoroughly enjoyed working BINGO on Thursday nights. Patricia was a student pilot and unlicensed co-pilot to Jay and an avid traveler. As soon as she heard the word “go” she was packed and ready. Patricia traveled to Greece twice, Italy, Alaska and out west. When Jay passed away, Patty became an active member of the Willows, a support group for widows in Boone.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Bessie; husband Jay in 2014; brother Richard Larrew; son, Michael Warren Mallas; and granddaughter, Kelly Kupke Irwin. She is survived by her daughters, Launie Jean (Doug) Sorem of Boone and Terrie Lynn Buckmaster of Independence, MO; sons, John Theodore (Shawn) Mallas of Independence, MO and Andrew Jay (Arlene) Mallas of Wichita Falls, TX; daughter-in-law, (Julie Mallas Bonner) of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren, Lynn (Jay) Bosler, Joel Kupke, J. Craig (Krista) Mallas, Chris (Misty Good) Mallas, Kyle (Ashley) Buckmaster, Joshua Mallas, Patricia (Stephen) Smith, Elizabeth (Trey) Lipe, Rachel Mallas and Danielle Mallas; great-grandchildren, Kyré Bosler, Hailey Mallas, Kaitlyn Mallas, Leah Smith, Douglas and Lachlan Buckmaster, Nicole Smith and Korbin and Harper Richardson.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Cremation will take place following services. Burial will be at a later date in Linwood Park Cemetery.
