BOONE, Iowa—The Boone Water Environment Station at McHose Park only recorded a trace of additional snowfall on Saturday which leaves the total since last Monday at 19.9″. Temperatures dropped to -20° for the low temperature this morning. The wind places the wind chill at -40° to -45°.
With the extreme cold, the Boone Fire Department is cautioning people using supplemental heat sources to be safe. Follow instructions on heaters and don’t leave them operating unattended. Those with fire places and wood burning heat sources will also need to monitor their use.
The Fire Department did have a small fire call on Saturday that was electrical and was tied to supplemental heating. Minimal damage was reported.
The Fire Department has also reminds residents to check their exhaust for their gas furnaces and water heaters to make sure they aren’t icing up during the cold. Make sure snow has been removed from around the vents. And, because of the snow depth, as you remove snow, make sure the fire hydrants are located and cleared if possible.
