Urban Chicken Ordinance Draws Complaints

Posted on 01 May 2024 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council members participating in the “Great Chicken Debate” Tuesday evening heard a number of concerns about restrictions for having chickens in Boone. Most of the discussion was about relaxing the ordinance to make it easier for residents to have chickens if they wish to do so. At the same time, there were some residents that were not supportive of the ordinance and were opposed to allowing chickens within the city limits.

The Boone City Council received a draft of an Urban Chicken Ordinance for consideration at their meeting on April 1st. Council members added language at the time and asked for a completed draft to be prepared for consideration. That’s the proposal residents got a chance to see this week. The ordinance that was prepared to go to the Council when they meet Monday, May 6th is now expected to have a number of changes suggested during Tuesday’s meeting.
