BOONE, Iowa—Joan Marie (Newland) Buechler – Sigmund, 88, of Boone, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Westhaven Community in Boone. She was born on February 8, 1936, in Woodward, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Aulich) Newland. She graduated from Boone High School in 1954.
In 1955, Joan married Richard Carter, the couple later divorced in 1968. On August 26, 1995, she married Kenneth Buechler, Kenneth passed away on June 11, 2003. On April 8, 2005, Joan married LeRoy Sigmund, LeRoy passed away on May 8, 2023.
Joan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone, Sweet Adelines, the First Baptist Church Choir, and taught Sunday School at the church. She had many jobs over the years, worked in the office for Donnelly, worked at the county home as a residential care assistant, the Credit Bureau as a receptionist, was the office manager of Spurgeon’s Department Store, and retired from J.C. Penny where she worked on the retail catalog.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Buechler; husband, LeRoy Sigmund; parents, Henry and Anna Newland; brother, Jerry Newland; brother-in-law, Gary McCool; son-in-law, Douglas VanBlaricum; uncle Al and aunt Irene Aulich, as well as several cousins.
Joan is survived by her daughters: Kathy (Monica) Shambaugh, Linda VanBlaricum, Joyce (Michael) Warburton, and S. Kaye (Bob) Root; grandchildren: Erik Melvin, Sarah Maisonet, Joshua Shambaugh, and Julie Warburton; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Samantha Maisonet; sister, Karen McCool; nephew, Jim McCool; niece, Mary Bruscher, and niece, Patti Miller.
Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the First Baptist Church in Boone. Interment will be at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church in Boone.
