AMES, Iowa—William K. Barquist, 83, of Ames, Iowa, passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on Monday, September 9, 2024. He had been a resident at Northridge Village in Ames since January 2021.
William was born on October 8, 1940, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Hazel (Bailey) Barquist. He attended elementary, middle, and high school in Boone and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Northern Iowa. On August 15, 1964, he married Sandra Olivia Stark at the United Methodist Church in Boxholm, Iowa. Following Sandra’s passing in 1997, William married Marilyn (Mannes) Thompson on January 8, 2000.
He served as a teacher of Business and Driver’s Education instructor in Humbolt. He then spent nearly 35 years as the office manager for Fareway Stores in Boone. William was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City, Tall Corn Antique Auto Club, Buick Club of America, and was active in the Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Barquist; parents, Floyd and Hazel Barquist; sister, Joyce (John) Boehm; brother, Ed Barquist; and son-in-law, Terry Hogelucht.
William is survived by his wife, Marilyn Barquist of Ames, IA; daughter, Kris Sturm of Waukee, IA; daughter, Kim Hogelucht of San Diego, CA; step-children: Jolene (Dennis) Pitkin of Clear Lake, IA, Julie Rogers of Valley Center, KS, and Brian Thompson of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren: Alex and Aaron Sturm of Waukee, IA, Olivia, Hans and Lars Hogelucht of San Diego, CA, Samantha Pitkin and Jessica (Andrew) Sorensen of Clear Lake, IA, Emma and Addison Rogers of Valley Center, KS, and Jacob Thompson of Iowa City, IA; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Tucker Sorensen of Clear Lake, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden, Iowa. Interment will be at Lawn Cemetery in Boone County. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family to use at their discretion.
