Heggen wins her weight class at Colfax-Mingo

Cadence Heggen placed 1st in her weight class as the Boone girls wrestling team competed at the Colfax-Mingo tournament Saturday, January 25. 

Boone placed 7th out of 21 teams with 90 points.  

Raccoon River-Northwest won the tournament with 305.5 points. 

Heggen received a 1st round bye and pinned Madison Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota in :17 in the quarterfinals. 

She pinned Kayden Tierney of Raccoon River-Northwest in 1:10 in the semifinals, and Heggen pinned Grace Hammer of Ogden in 3:25 to take the championship at 190 pounds. 

Natalie Thompson placed 3rd at 145 pounds, and Poppy Malone placed 3rd at 105 pounds. 

In her first round, Thompson was pinned by Bella Bruins of Raccoon River-Northwest in :51. 

In the consolation rounds, she received a bye before pinning Reagan Stephenson of Ankeny in 1:12 before pinning Serena Thayer of Saydel in 3:41. 

In the consolation semifinals, Thompson pinned Kamryn Faas of Ames in 5:04, and in the 3rd place match, she pinned Kamiya Lepley of Newton in 3:35. 

Malone received two byes before losing by decision to Kylee Adams of Newton, 4-3. 

In the consolation semifinals, she pinned Brookelynn Lonnevik of Norwalk in :59, and in the 3rd place match, Malone pinned Trinity Stoneburner of Ogden in :57. 

Emersyn Zehner placed 5th at 140 pounds. 

She received a first-round bye before getting pinned by Naomi Templeman of Raccoon River-Northwest in 1:19. 

In the consolation rounds, Zehner pinned Mikayela Rivas of Chariton in :52 and won by medical forfeit over Layla Shilling of Tri-County. 

In the consolation semifinals, she was pinned by Lauryn Metcalf of Ames in :39, and in the 5th place match, Zehner pinned Lily Brenner of Colfax-Mingo in :59. 

Other wrestlers competing at Colfax-Mingo included Johanna Meeks at 115 pounds, Averie Strollo at 120 pounds, Abbie Molitor at 130 pounds, and Gracie Vodenik at 135 pounds.

The Toreadors will compete in regionals Friday, January 31, at Ames.
