OGDEN, Iowa—Mary Jean Carlson, 97, of Ogden, passed away at Westhaven Community in Boone, IA, in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025. She had been a resident at the Westhaven Community since February 2024.

Jean was born on April 22, 1928, in Jasper Co., IA, the daughter of Bruce and Linnie (Paul) Campbell. Jean married Clarence L. Carlson on 1/28/1951, with the wedding taking place at the Methodist church in Ogden.

She graduated from Laurel Consolidated High School in Laurel, IA 1946. After graduation, she continued her education at the Thompson Beauty School in Des Moines. While at Thompson’s, Jean worked part-time at the Younker’s Tea Room in downtown Des Moines. Upon completing her coursework at Thompson’s Jean, with a beauty school friend from Ogden, she opened a beauty shop in Ogden. She eventually opened her own shop – the Futuristic Beauty Salon – in her home after marrying Clarence.

After retiring from ‘fixing hair,’ Jean worked at various other endeavors. She was a home health aid, a lunch room attendant at Howe school, an OHS girls’ basketball chaperone, and provided care for various kids, both her own grandchildren and other families in Ogden. She developed a reputation for the Scotcheroos she made for the girls’ basketball team, making two pans for them, whether for at-home or away games. Jean was also known for going above and beyond in these various tasks/jobs, providing help and support where needed.

Jean was a member of the CUMC in Ogden, offering financial support for the various women’s circles at the church. Even though she did not have any known hobbies, she enjoyed supporting her grandkids by attending the various sporting events they were involved in at the time. Jean looked forward to family visits, particularly with her birth family, who lived in and around Marshall County, along with those who came to visit her in Ogden.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and 10 siblings, her husband, and several other relatives.

She is survived by 3 sons: Ron of Boone – and his sons James (Valerie) of Cheyenne, WY and Paul (Faith) of Grimes IA; Bruce (Cathy) – and their children Makayla and Cody of Ogden, and Jon of Ogden – and his sons Ben (Joanna) of Goldfield and Brent (Hannah) of Granger and her daughter Sue also of Ogden – and her children Mike and Jennifer. She had 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden, with Reverend Heidi Farmer officiating. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be before the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family to use at their discretion.

Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, 609 7th Street, Boone is assisting the family with these arrangements.
