Boone boys’ tennis storms through substate

The Boone boys’ tennis team continued its postseason dominance on Saturday, May 17, at McHose Park, sweeping Harlan, 6-0, in the substate 2 quarterfinals before defeating Atlantic, 5-0, in the semifinals.

The Boone boys’ tennis team continued its postseason dominance on Saturday, May 17, at McHose Park, sweeping Harlan, 6-0, in the substate 2 quarterfinals before defeating Atlantic, 5-0, in the semifinals.

Quarterfinals: Boone 6, Harlan 0 

In their opening match, Boone overwhelmed Harlan with a 6-0 sweep, clinching the win through singles play.  

No. 1 Devin Silbaugh led the charge with a 6-0, 6-1 win, while No. 2 Tyler Lindahl delivered a 6-0, 6-0 victory. 

No. 3 Wes Van Pelt won, 6-0, 6-2, as did No. 4 Braxtan Sproule, 6-1, 6-3. 

No. 5 Calvin Jordan also had a 6-0, 6-0 victory, and No. 6 Patrick Houser closed out the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win. 

With the match decided in singles, doubles play was not required.  

Boone had its usual pairings ready: No. 1 Silbaugh/Lindahl, No. 2 Sproule/Houser, and No. 3 Van Pelt/Jordan. 

Semifinals: Boone 5, Atlantic 0 

Boone carried its momentum into the semifinals against Atlantic, securing another decisive 5-0 win.  

Silbaugh’s match was unfinished at 6-1, 6-6, as the rest of the team sealed the victory. 

Lindahl won, 6-3, 6-1, and as did Van Pelt,, 7-5, 6-1. 

Sproule was victorious, 6-4, 6-1, Jordan had a 6-3, 6-2 win, and Houser also won 6-1, 6-2. 

Once again, Boone’s singles victories rendered doubles play unnecessary.

With back-to-back shutouts, Boone advances to the substate 2 finals, hoping to secure its ninth consecutive appearance at state.  

Boone (14-2) will face Shenandoah (14-0) in the substate 2 championship at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in Shenandoah.
