From Grape to Glass: Microbial Resistance in the Vineyard and Winery Field Day June 30th

KWBG 06/14/25

AMES, Iowa – Grape growers, winemakers, and extension and other related industry personnel are invited to a June 30 field day focusing on microbial resistance in vineyards and wineries.

“This one-of-a-kind gathering will explore how microbial resistance, from fungicide-resistant pathogens in the vineyard to spoilage microbes surviving sanitizers in the cellar, is reshaping how to manage disease, quality and safety,” said Suzanne Slack, assistant professor and extension fruit crop specialist at Iowa State University.

Experts from plant pathology, enology and viticulture will share the latest research and practical tools for navigating these invisible threats. Topics are:

  • Bacterial and fungal disease identification
  • Resistance management strategies in the vineyard
  • Sprayer application techniques and nozzle comparisons
  • Spray rate and coverage calculations
  • Microbial resistance challenges in the winery

This field day will take place on June 30 at Soldiers Creek Winery, 1584 Paragon Ave, Fort Dodge. Participants can choose to attend one of two session times: 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 7 p.m.

There is no cost to attend, but online registration is required. Vineyard managers, winery operators and those passionate about grapes and their subsequent fermentation are welcome to attend.

This program is supported by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and a grant from the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, grant #ONC24-137
