Madrid baseball rallies past Perry

The Madrid baseball team put together a steady offensive performance Thursday, June 19, to earn an 8-5 non-conference road win over Perry. 

The Bluejays (3-16) jumped out early with runs in the first and second innings and added single tallies in the fourth and seventh, but couldn’t keep pace with Madrid’s consistent scoring. 

Madrid (5-10) chipped away inning by inning, scoring in five consecutive innings to overcome an early deficit.  

After falling behind 3-1 through two innings, the Tigers responded with a run in the third, two in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to take control of the game. 

Easton Halverson sparked the offense with a hit, two runs scored, and an four stolen bases.  

Preston Wicker delivered at the plate with a hit and two RBIs, while also swiping a base. 

Emerson Bridgewater and Conner Pettiecord each added a hit and crossed the plate twice. 

Kole Deppe contributed both on the mound and at the plate, recording a hit and a run scored while earning the win as the starting pitcher.  

Deppe struck out two in his outing.  

Levi Kockler came on in relief and added three strikeouts to help seal the victory. 

Other contributors included Mason Moorman with a hit and McCoy Cooley with a run scored. 

West Central Valley 9, Madrid 1 

On Tuesday, June 17, Madrid fell to West Central Valley, 9-1, in a West Central Conference matchup at Stuart.  

Preston Wicker led the Tigers with three hits, while Halverson drove in the team’s lone run.  

Moorman added two hits, and Cooley scored the only run.  

Cayden Loerzel took the loss in relief, striking out one. 

Madrid (5-10 overall, 3-9 conference) will look to build on Thursday’s win when they travel to Panorama (3-13, 2-10) for a conference game on Monday, June 23.
