Madrid girls team advances to state cross country meet

The Madrid girls’ cross country team delivered a dominant performance on Thursday, October 23, winning the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Jewell and securing a team berth to the Iowa High School State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, November 1.

The Madrid girls’ cross country team delivered a dominant performance on Thursday, October 23, winning the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Jewell and securing a team berth to the Iowa High School State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, November 1. 

Led by senior Katelyn Brandhorst, who took 1st place with a time of 19:17.7, the Tigers placed five runners in the top 20, finishing with just 40 points to beat runner-up Alta-Aurelia (85). 

Individual results are as follows: 

  • 1st – Katelyn Brandhorst (12) – 19:17.7 
  • 2nd – Madelyn Grothus (11) – 19:53.4 
  • 4th – Hannah Brandhorst (11) – 20:15.3 
  • 14th – Adelyn White (11) – 22:49.7 
  • 19th – Makayla Mullenbach (9) – 23:03.6 
  • 25th – Ari Mundy (11) – 23:24.6 
  • 33rd – Ella Hutchinson (9) – 24:29.4 

The Madrid boys team placed 8th overall, led by freshman Hudson White, who finished 17th with a time of 18:24.4.  

Senior Cavin Pehl followed closely in 19th at 18:29.3, and Kris Petersen placed 28th in 19:07.7. 

Individual results are as follows: 

17th – Hudson White (9) – 18:24.4 

  • 19th – Cavin Pehl (12) – 18:29.3 
  • 28th – Kris Petersen (10) – 19:07.7 
  • 55th – Aiden Titus (10) – 21:03.1 
  • 69th – Cole Berberich (9) – 22:10.8 
  • 71st – Blane Schneider (12) – 22:18.1 
  • 77th – Landen Schneider (12) – 23:19.0 

The boys finished 6th at the conference meet earlier this month. 

Season best times for the boys are as follows: 

Hudson White – 17:47.00 

  • Caleb Berberich – 17:59.00 
  • Cavin Pehl – 18:01.00
