Hammer wins championship at Colfax-Mingo

Grace Hammer won a championship as the Ogden girls’ wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the Colfax‑Mingo Invitational on Saturday, January 24, placing sixth overall in a 19‑team field.

Grace Hammer won a championship as the Ogden girls’ wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the Colfax‑Mingo Invitational on Saturday, January 24, placing sixth overall in a 19‑team field. 

Ogden finished the day with 106 team points, just behind Norwalk for fifth place.  

Pella won the team title with 193 points, followed by Iowa Valley, Marengo (178) and Sigourney‑Keota (143). 

The Bulldogs were led by a championship effort from Grace Hammer at 190 pounds. Hammer claimed first place after recording three straight wins by fall.  

She pinned her first two opponents in under a minute before finishing the tournament with a decisive fall in the championship match. 

Ogden also earned a runner‑up finish from Jozlyn Wells at 130 pounds.  

Jozlyn Wells placed second, opening the tournament with consecutive wins by fall and losing in the title match. 

At 100 pounds, Rylin Casey battled through a tough bracket to earn a fifth‑place finish.  

Casey recorded two wins by fall on the day, including a pin in the fifth‑place match. 

Another fifth‑place performance came at 110 pounds from Trinity Stoneburner.  

Stoneburner posted three wins by fall during the tournament, finishing strong with a pin in the placement match. 

Sophie Seligman added to Ogden’s total at 125 pounds, placing fifth.  

Seligman earned three victories by fall in the consolation rounds and won by forfeit in the fifth‑place match. 

Ogden picked up additional scoring from Carlie Hinderaker, who placed sixth at 115 pounds, highlighted by a quick pin in the quarterfinals.  

The Bulldogs also received team points from Alauna Wells, Kinley Hare, Makayla Alexander and Ruby Tasler.

The Bulldogs next compete in the Class 1A, Region 2, state qualifying meet Friday, January 30, at Colfax-Mingo. 

Teams competing in Ogden’s region are East Union, Colfax-Mingo, Southwest Valley, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Martensdale-St. Mary’s, Clarke Community, Mount Ayr, Interstate 35, Saydel and Ogden.
