Joining us on coaches corner here in KWBG going to talk Boone boys wrestling.
Ryan Ross joining us today and man, we got so much to unpack that it's a good thing that I never have really a time limit on these because i'm not sure When i'm gonna be able to stop Rossi with the excitement level because Regional duels obviously tomorrow night raccoon river conference a runner-up finish over the weekend some fantastic duels to end I hate to say the regular season But I think Ross knows what i'm when i'm meaning about that because we're kind of in postseason mode now and so ryan I'll ask you where do you want to start my man?
You got a lot of good stuff going on right now Oh, geez, I yeah, I don't know. I don't know really where to start. I suppose uh You know touching on this past weekend that was That was fun. It was uh It's yeah post season. I really love the postseason.
I mean The way we train in our room is everything's just preparation for right now So, you know the bumps and bruises the ups and downs the whatever from november to Conference tournament.
They are what they are, but you know, everything is in preparation for this postseason itself It's kind of the way wrestling works Well, and I think to be fair and I know and on any given saturday anything can happen But just the way ryan that the duels had gone this past season with your raccoon river conference opponents What you had been able to accomplish?
Bonus points that had scored like I said anything can happen I realized on a saturday you had to feel pretty confident on how the boys were looking even before the meet started in huxley Yeah, yeah, I was uh, I was super excited for you know, the possibilities, um this past weekend.
Um, like you said we had a great you know dual season and um so, you know, there is a big difference between duels and tournaments and Saturdays get long and you definitely take your bumps and bruises through the day.
So you got to Find a way to wrestle through some pain and then you know, there's the mental side of things and So, you know tournaments are they're nasty. It's a nasty beast. It's wrestling in general.
It's just a hard thing to do and And you know when you're in the raccoon river conference, which you know, I think is one of the toughest conferences in the the state You know, you're gonna you're gonna battle some demons for sure well, yeah came out of it with three champions and Easton landis obviously picks up his first being a freshman at 106 and then it's fun to to kind of go from The the new part of boon wrestling to the I always hate to say aged but I think aj would probably admit being a senior He's had a lot of wars out there But you go from the freshman and landis obviously the senior with aj braddock, uh, you know conference champion I think if I remember right ryan you can tell me if i'm wrong.
I think that's his third I know he didn't get four but pretty sure that was his third and then brody warrick obviously with a championship, too We had some runners up that we'll talk about but uh, what a neat part about boon wrestling to have some of the new Uh, the the fresh blood coming in and then aj braddock obviously with your senior leadership Yeah, I I mean you nailed it right there.
It's uh, you know, easton landis is just one of those guys that he just works All the time. He doesn't complain.
He comes in puts puts his stuff in we kind of hit this I want to say wall because he still found a way to win, but you know, he's so explosive and he's got Such powerful offense that you know, he kind of got stuck in this uh Deal where he wasn't being as explosive As I think he can be but then you know Like you were saying you've got aj braddock in there and he's battling top 10 guys and and I think it's somebody awesome for easton to look up to and and he Most certainly got back to his stuff This week and he looked unbelievable You know getting bonus points in every single match And yeah, I mean overall that was that was fantastic, you know, and then you've got your Some of these other guys that weren't in the finals, but these freshmen it's What what kate and um aj are able to do as leaders and an example they set for these young guys It's awesome.
I mean there are many coaches for sure Well, and you talked about some of the young guns, but uh hayden near him a fourth place finish With a huge opening round matchup though that gets him to where he knew he was going to be on the podium Owen thomas another freshman with a runner-up finish.
I mean Aiden harris with a fifth place finish, you know These are all freshmen that we get a chance to to watch and enjoy here for the next three years ryan I mean that that's what's fun for me. And then you know, even to trend eckerd.
We forget about trend Here's a kid who you know finishes up the runner-up, but we still get a couple more years out of trend too We've got We've definitely got some Fun guys in the room right now that are young.
Um, I think My favorite part about this The youth of our team is they're all super tight.
They're they're pretty good friends Um, and then they have fun wrestling and they want to keep wrestling um Which is something maybe that we could be better at as a Team is getting that summer wrestling, but the friendship that these guys have and the push that they have I think they're just going to make each other better because I don't think we're going to stop You know anytime soon.
So I think we'll wrestle all summer long I think that's huge. But yeah, I mean You bring it up trent that kid his development through a season is just crazy like You know, he makes all these Young guy mistakes and he's a monster. I mean he's huge.
He's 175 pounds of like 5 body fat And you know, he's wrestling Again, you know, he's wrestling 18 year olds and dude dudes at 175 pounds and You know revenge loss in the semifinals against rile from bond or ant that kid is an absolute hammer and And really trent dominated the entire match.
So um Yeah, he's he's been phenomenal hating near him with that win. That was absolutely monstrous. Owen thomas revenge Of revenge the loss in the semifinals. He lost 11 to 7 To that kid just a week ago from north poke and it just dominated the match.
I mean The development is huge.
You know these boys believing in themselves is growing every single day and Like I said, we wrestle all season for right now So there isn't a better time to believe in yourself and and keep growing so Well, and for those of you that are might be making a phone call to ryan ross at some point if you get screened It does not have to do with his raccoon river conference coach of the year award He did a new update to his phone.
Is that correct? Or are you screening us now rossie? No No, i'm old and have no idea what just happened to my phone. So here we are Well congrats on that too ryan by the way in all seriousness Yeah, that was that was cool.
But you know, that's One of those deals that You know, they give it to me, but it's there's a lot more people to thank than than me on that one. We have Hands down in my opinion the best coaching staff in the state of iowa.
So I mean There's about 10 of us, you know from youth high school level that They all deserve that award for sure Well and something else we get a chance to backtrack and what a great reason to backtrack, but then last week Uh, we knew it was coming out Just kind of waiting to see when the final dual rankings would come out Were you sweating a little bit?
And what did it feel like to see boons name on that line?
No, we just yeah sweating a little bit that was uh 24 hours of just I can't wait to see it Uh, I was actually in an area without reception Uh doing a bid for work And when I came up the hill my phone just started lighting up So that was that that was pretty cool.
Um And well deserved our boys We wrestled our hearts out this year and So yeah, I mean the the dual at north bloke had me worrying um but that was uh What an accomplishment, you know we go we're You know, I talk to the boys quite a bit about this and I don't know if it's just positive reinforcement or what the deal is but I find it pretty special when you know, we're the second smallest 3a school in iowa and And we're out here battling with the money and numbers that some of these schools have and it just shows the grit and buy-in and uh the community sport that we're starting to get from it's just It's an all-around awesome deal for boon and i'm pretty proud of our guys and Pretty proud community member when you know, like I said my phone I don't know what I had 20 text messages snapchat facebook messages phone call his voicemails.
It was crazy. So The support's there and I do think that boon wrestling You know earning itself Some some credit here in town and I love that. Yeah, absolutely. Love that.
Hey final thing This is obviously an opponent that we don't see very often in luis central Uh, I think if anybody knows wrestling even just a 1 a little bit You know when you hear luis central, you know that they've had just some fantastic history when it comes to wrestling Ryan you got a little bit of a scouting report on luis central for me I do.
Yeah. No, I think uh, you know, i've studied it a little bit i'll probably get into A little more depth here before practice tonight, but yeah, I think uh They're an absolutely incredible team. Um, they've got some super super super Tough individuals.
Um, so we will see I know they like to bounce their guys around and and chase the competition with their studs and You know as far as we go, you know, i'll let the cat out of the bag We're gonna wrestle our guys where they wrestle and if they want to bump around and So be it so We'll we'll have a guy waiting for him ready to go.
