BOONE, Iowa—Donald L. Sondall, age 84, of Boone, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Don was born on December 10, 1941, in Story City, the son of Clarence and Lorraine (Thompson) Sondall. He graduated from Roland High School in 1959, where he excelled at baseball and basketball. Don never missed a class reunion and enjoyed reminiscing about his days in Roland. He was proud of his years of service in the US Army Reserve, including a period of domestic active duty.
On June 25, 1970, Don was united in marriage with Judy Paris at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. From this union, two children were born- Michael and Deb.
Don worked at Fareway, Casey’s, and at Iowa State University. Shortly before and after retiring from ISU, Don enjoyed using his beloved green Lawn-Boy to mow for his neighbors.
Earlier in life, Don collected coins and baseball cards. As he grew older, he enjoyed spending time with his dogs, bird watching, gardening, completing Charles Wysocki jigsaw puzzles, playing Iowa Lottery scratch tickets, and listening to Elvis Presley. Don drank strawberry Kool-Aid by the gallon, always adding extra sugar. He loved watching sports, particularly the New York Yankees, Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Cleveland Browns. Don adored being a grandpa to his six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Judy; and son-in-law, Nathan Saetveit.
Don is survived by his children, Michael (Natasha) Sondall of Boone and Deb Saeveit of Omaha, NE; one brother, Steve (Cheryl) Sondall of Norwalk; six grandchildren, Avery and Anna Sondall, Ben and Charlie Saetveit, and Paris and Felix Sondall; two sisters-in-law, Linda Patterson of Boone and Donna Paris of Boone; and extended family.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 13, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family to use at their discretion.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.
