With us on Coach's Corner on KWBG, you're going to talk some DMACC women's basketball.
Jocelyn Kovarik joining us as the Bears get ready for, I can't believe we're going to say it, but I got to say it because it's postseason time and they will travel to Iowa Central for the Region 11A semi-finals. Easy for me to say.
Coming up tomorrow afternoon up in Fort Dodge at one. Let's go back though, Joce, before we talk about Iowa Central. I know it was not maybe the cleanest win. It's one of those you probably don't love to watch back on film. But hey, a win is a win.
You got a nice one over Ellsworth on Wednesday night. Yeah, no, it was not the cleanest win ever, that's for sure. But thank you. We needed that. That was the right time of year. The big thing with this team is they just fight and fight and fight.
Even if we only score 45 points, if they score less, that's what we need the time of year and the gaps are the great job of that. I knew you'd come positive with me. Now guys, I'm going to tell you something.
Maybe off air, Jocelyn wasn't quite as positive as she's letting on right now. In all seriousness, Jocelyn, there's a lot of things that I can look back at this game. 26 points in the paint. You also got 17 from your bench and you scored 17 points off their turnovers too.
They had 20 of them. I know you'd like that number maybe to be a little bit higher, but boy, you got a lot of little things that actually worked out really nice. Yeah, and that's a great point. That's kind of been our year.
It's all those little things that work really well for us to go out the hustle plays. We have not had the best shooting season ever. That's not a secret. So it's all those little things, the feels that can turn into points, the turnover that we get the ball, the possession.
That's what we've lived off of and the girls have really, they've grown to love it and accept it and go with that. I know you said you looked at each other on the bench a few times and said, why can't we get this basketball in the hoop?
Jocelyn, was it just one of those nights maybe? It was. Yeah, like I said, overall, we've not shot great all season. It's just kind of been the hustle stuff. But it was just a rough night overall.
And the big thing with the girls, especially this time of year, yesterday we came in and we shot and we shot and we shot. In the post, we went up through the pad and was physical.
All the little stuff that built that confidence so that hopefully we can come out tomorrow and shoot really well. But yeah, we know it.
And you almost have to, this time of year, you got to work hard, but also you got to look at them after they miss what they should have made and say, hey, you're all right. It happens. It happens. Keep going. Keep playing. Shoot it again. Shoot it again. Shoot it again. Yeah.
So scouting report, it's always these region 11 tournaments to me are always so difficult because you've seen these teams twice unless, you know, something really weird happens with weather and you miss a game because you just can't get it rescheduled.
I would say 99.9% of the time. This is the be the third time you've seen this team this year. You guys split with Iowa central during the regular season. Now, last time you got together, boy, you guys shot lights out and played great defense that afternoon.
Josh, what do you expect in here tomorrow from Fort Dodge? They are. I mean, they're such a good team. They're tough. They're physical. You know, they, they pushed the ball really hard. It's a really, it's a really good matchup for us.
That we have got to come with the physicality and the right mindset. And you know, and I think that I think our young ladies are there.
I think they're ready for that, but they are a, they are a tough physical team that can shoot well from the outside and they've got a couple of big inside that run the floor really well.
And, you know, this time of year too, like I said, after you've played him a couple of times, a lot of watching film, you know, seeing what they did, thinking about what they might change, how we're going to adjust.
And I'm very fortunate to have two wonderful assistant coaches, you know, that were really on top of things and bring new ideas and are just, I, I'm very blessed to have them with us.
But yeah, it's, it's, it is a little bit of that grind after you play in a couple of times and you're, and you're going back and looking again and see if we need to change something and what that looks like.
But I was meant to have a great team, a good matchup to work side to play on. I think something else that is always kind of fun this time of year too, Joss is it's turning time. Let's go. I mean, this is a win. You move on. This is a lose. Some of you may call it a career.
Some of you may, okay, we'll get ready and we'll get some off season work in. I mean, that's what I think brings the juice in these, these games, Joss. Yep. Yep.
And it's, you know, it's, it's, it's interesting to kind of feel out the mindset of, of our, our gals always this time of year. And this year it's been a lot of fun.
Cause I think more than ever, we have a whole bunch of young ladies that understand tournament time and have participated in, you know, in high school and tournament time and just understand how fun it is if you're willing to compete and keep working for it.
But it's a long season. So every once in a while, you know, there's a few that drop off. You just got to keep as many involved and excited as possible. All right, Joss, I'll let you go coach speak on me here.
And I know you love doing this, but if you don't want to, I'm fair with that too. But give me a couple of things. What does DMACC need to do to survive in advance tomorrow? We need to rebound.
Iowa Central has a really great big girl that can rebound offensively and defensively, but we need to keep her off the board. They have some really quick guards. They their point guard pushes incredibly quick down the floor. And again, great matchup.
We've got a great point guard defender. So if we can slow her down and then, you know, have that help side rotation, if she gets past, cause we still want to get up, we want to pressure. That's what we do. And then shooters, they've got, they've got big time shooters.
So, you know, as much as possible, sticking to who we need to stick to, not helping when we don't need to help. It's stuff we talk about over the, you know, yesterday and today we go into detail, watch a lot of film on that.
And then again, today, just like yesterday, just building that confidence up again for the gals and their shooting, whether it's underneath the basket or out on that three point line, you know, just making sure they understand that we believe in them.
They can put that ball through the basket. See you didn't go full coach speak on me. I love it, Josh. I appreciate that. Hey, Josh, best of luck coming up tomorrow against Iowa Central. It's turning time. It always gets my juices kind of flowing a little bit too.
I get excited for this. So I have a blast up there and maybe bring some earplugs. Awesome. All right. Thank you, Ryan. We appreciate it. You bet. DMACC Women's Basketball Coach, Jocelyn Cavara joining us on Coaches Corner.
