KWBG 03/11/26

Transcript

Joining us on coach's corner here in KWBG get a chance to put a wrap on a really successful girls basketball season for Madrid and kelvin adams joining us.

I tell you what coach I know When we talked at the beginning of this season, there were definitely some pieces that were going to be there I know you told me listen I think our schedule is a little favorable here at the beginning of the year too where we can you know get some confidence going But boy, I think if we would have had a conversation and been a fly on the wall and said hey coach By the way, you're gonna win five games in a row You're gonna go on a little bit of a streak on the other side But you're gonna come back with some more boy, you'd have taken that to start the year off in a heartbeat Well, absolutely wouldn't have turned it down for a second So I think I think that was what was special about this group is is any season you're gonna have Ups and downs and it's and within games you have ups and downs and it's how you respond to those and so there were Obviously a hot start and then lose four in a row and how do you respond to that?

And years past and I don't know that we were to handle it as well So I think that was kind of a testament to this This team that they they were mentally tougher than even they had been individually and as a collective group in the past So we were able to always kind of bounce back and find our find our rhythm again and just understand it's a long season And so proud of that and the mental effort of those girls coach I know that November 21st was a long time ago, but take me back into the gym at halftime He had 46 points against AGW SR What what do you talk to the girls about when you've had a half like that?

I mean my gosh one of your best shooting halves I hate to say ever because we want to obviously duplicate that or be better than that some point But I mean my goodness coach, that's an amazing half Well statistically, it was our best shooting half and our best shooting game ever So are we but that the best part about that game was to is not only do we score the most points and program history That night we had the least amount of points scored against us in program history So we we set records on both sides of the ball that night, which was great So it's you know, you don't prepare for some of the locker and speeches So I definitely didn't anticipate we were gonna come out and And and not miss very much in that in that game or in that half So it was it was a fun locker room But again in the game of basketball that can that can change pretty quick And so I mean obviously it was an exciting way to start the season though And I think built some momentum going forward definitely well, and then I'm gonna fast forward you months later where you go to East Sac County.

Oh by the way We give up no points in the fourth quarter of a postseason game on the road I mean Kelvin, there's a lot of things and we're gonna talk about the school record for wins here in just a minute But another one of those where you are you're gonna look back?

I'm sure in five ten years and go and remember that one time We got the drive on highway 20 for nine hours and then we didn't give up any points in the fourth Coach what a night Yeah, it was and again We've said from from the get-go that that's how we're gonna win games is on the defensive side of the ball And so to finish that game with zero points given up in the fourth quarter.

It was It was a great way to end it So again knowing that's where we want to hang our hats to do it in the postseason And I think I mentioned before too with with Lauren Dvorak sitting with the bloody nose on the bench for a while, too It took it took some grit from some other girls to step up and find ways and So yeah, we're very very proud of that effort But I'm I'm really okay if I don't see highway 20 for quite some time.

That would yep Thank you. That would be just fine too coach. I'd be fine with that as well Some great radio stations on the way up though with some music.

I will I will say that Here's I'll be Nelly negative real quick and then I want to then I'm we're gonna just go completely positive after that I look back Kelvin There might have been even five or six games that could have went the other way, too Is that a what could have been or do you enjoy the school record for wins and let's not look back at those?

Well, I think we use that as motivation still that these girls obviously raised the bar again That's kind of been our challenge each of my five years is to raise the bar From from where we started and they've continued to do that But I think knowing that there is some left out there has motivated our girls already Going into to next season and again in our conference There's not that you sit and check ones and say yes, we're gonna win because there aren't those in our conference But you got some teams that you know, you're gonna have to have a heck of a night to compete with Thankfully a couple of those are leaving the conference now or in the near future But we felt like we were in a position this year with the group that we hadn't That we were gonna be in a lot of coin flip games And we felt like we took care of a lot of those you want to win those close games those kind of the 50-50 games But yeah, there were definitely some that you go back and say, you know could have been another one here another one here You know a quarter here where we do something different Hit some free throws in certain situations string together a few more stops So I think that leaves a little bit of meat on the bone for us to keep us motivated Kelvin did the girls talk to you and you were getting close to the to the school record I mean was that something that you embraced?

Did you keep quiet about it? Did you jump at the top of the Madrid school yelling that we were close to the school records? I mean, how did you approach that when you guys written close? You know what?

We've we've mentioned that when we went back and compiled the stats Our second year coach furnace and I had to do a lot of digging to find some gaps in years and some different stats and so We showed that we put the stats in front of the girls and just so you know If you want to work as an individual or as a team your name can be in here your team can be in here I'm sure girls have known that pen as the bar Ever since we compiled those my second year So going into the season and our preseason surveys and questionnaires a lot of girls that was that was their goal They wanted to set set the record.

So it wasn't something that we talked about it early But then we kind of put it in the back of our mind But definitely when we got it we celebrated it.

It's definitely something that we were gonna We were gonna be proud of and then again, I think we've had to reset the bar and okay So are all we content with with ten or do we you know?

We've tied it now do we want to beat it and again thinking about we could have set that bar a little bit higher So we didn't hide from it But after we got it we said we were gonna enjoy it that night and then turn the page and start worrying about the next opponent Yeah, I think you have to Three seniors that obviously are gonna be really missed They definitely left their mark when it comes to Madrige girls basketball with obviously Laura Eagleton Lauren Dvorak What a fantastic career for her as well And then Sam Springer still hit a shot that I can't believe went down to close a gym Literally that she was able to do down in Max burr I mean three three seniors that are leaving Kelvin that I have really left their mark in kind of different ways at Madrige Yeah, and that's what we we talked about at the end of the the season I mean Sam is gonna have a couple of the biggest shot and not only the orient one But she had a huge one against West Central This year as well, so she was not afraid to shoot it hit big shots She was just a girl that we played in a lot of different places So that was nice having her versatility and then Lauren Dvorak obviously her senior season was Something that we talked about at the start of the year of what what it could be and she she answered the bell and did Did a phenomenal job and wrote wrote her story with with a great ending and then Laura Eagleton There's never been a girl in in Madrige history Since all the way back when I was in school to now that I know is put in more time Then then Laura and so she deserved all the accolades and an amount of times that her name is in the record book It's well deserved.

I know we've got a lot of young players Obviously that saw some time this year no question, which is gonna feel really good But we've also got girls that now we're gonna have to kind of play maybe a little bit older than they are when they come In next year Kelvin embrace this a little nervous excited.

I mean is it kind of all the things put together for one thing? Yeah, I mean I think for our young girls.

It's motivation knowing that there's there's minutes to be had there's Spots we had you got to replace three starters, which is is never easy in three that played major major minutes for us But I tell you what they're I think I think they're hungry They've already they've already hit the gym and been getting shots up and and getting after it And so I mean we had three sophomores this year and live Jay and and ride who all got time as freshmen Also time at different points this year and now have a huge opportunity going into next year and we we love our freshman class They're just great kids They're hard workers and that's a group that's been with us all the way down since they were in fifth and sixth grade coming to our youth And so they've got the opportunity they got the opportunity to play a lot of JV this year Which benefited them a ton and so I think a lot of them are motivated and saw individual growth And they're a collective group that's stuck together For a number of years and are and I think are still riding this together, which is which is awesome So I'm gonna we'll bring in a number of eighth graders that have had the opportunity to Work with our high school girls in practice and spend a lot of time in the gym with them So some of those girls will come in and push push right away as well So yeah, it's gonna be tough to replace those three But we are we are excited about the girls that we have coming back and there I could said they're they're already working Which is awesome Kelvin congrats on a fantastic and record-breaking season always appreciate the coaches corners And I was gonna ask you if you had one Game day outfit that you would go to and you would bring back every year with just an alteration I don't know if I could pick one though that I saw so I'm not even gonna put you out on the limit I'm just gonna say I can't wait to see what's in the store for next year Well, I tell you what we did get criticized this year one of our players because when we took a group of youth girls down to Play down at the state tournament one of the half times and coach furnace and I were going through our our attire options for down there And after I went through five or six, she said is there an option?

That's none of the above and you guys just not own a plain black Madrid shirt Oh and yeah, so I I guess they're calling for us to go more plain, but we just we can't do it So we got to go to the drawing board and see what we can come up with next. I got a toned I got some ideas.

I I do have some ideas. That's for sure Kelvin. Thanks for a great season We'll look forward to seeing you around.

I know this spring and summer and we'll talk oops again in November Thanks for everything around you met Kelvin Adams again joining us Madrig girls basketball here on coaches corner
