KWBG 03/12/26

Transcript

Joining us on coach's corner on KWBG gonna wrap up Boom Girls basketball season Cole Corson joining us Tori doors Well, I tell you what I know you told me this about a month or so No, it's probably a couple of months actually before the season was gonna get started coach you decided to kind of change how you guys were going to I Can't even say just offensively because it kind of changed what you did defensively as well Cole I guess tell me when you when you in and Kind of the girls and you started kind of figuring out this new man.

Do I call it helter-skelter? What do you what do we call this kind of pace you guys went at this year?

Pretty much that it it was helter-skelter at times and it was chaotic at times, but Yeah, that's what we wanted to kind of transfer our style to that you you kind of have to find your own little Way about what you're gonna do and we felt we had a lot of girls that could contribute this year in various ways and so that's we worked it over the summer and You know, we didn't have everything full-fledged in the summer and we did some trial and error over the summer But I think once we hit some Some grooves spots at times.

I think people could really start to feel okay especially the games where We played a good team turn them over and we were hitting shots We were very very highly competitive in those games and so I think that's where we want to continue to build off of and get to is You know one was a Norfolk at home is we hit some shots that night I think we had six or seven threes that night of the night where we hit shots got them out of sorts We had the pace going and it's a seven-point game in the fourth quarter With the team that makes the state tournament and so that that's where we want to get to Our biggest thing is is we got to improve our shooting Well, I tell you the one thing that was very evident defensively was just how the girls would get after other teams and I If I would have been keeping track of steals on a lot of nights, I probably would have ran out of pen ink.

I mean Coach that was one thing that was a lot of fun to watch active hands active defense And there were some nights that yeah, maybe a little bit too handsy and the fouls kind of came down But boy for the most night that was a pretty fun thing to watch as well This is one of the top teams that when it came to steals in 4a Yeah, and I think That's also how we sold it to the girls to is One it can help get you know people in the stands a little bit is it's an exciting brain of basketball Because there's action all the time and as long as you know The fouls aren't racking up and you're you know killing the pace of the game and stuff like that It gets really exciting really fast and like you said we were second in class 4a in steals We averaged 14 point for a game and we lost out to leading the state to healin who averaged 14.5 And they were a state semi-finalist team Our biggest thing like like we talked about is just boils down to if we can play this style and hit some shots It's going to be really really hard for teams to match it Because you know we had 320 steals on the season we were 13 away from a school record And we did it in two less games so the school record was in a 24 game Stretch and we did it in 22 games that it you know if we get that Western City game and go play doubts in our drives and maybe we get close to that school record and get the steals in that game whatever it might be but Yeah, the biggest thing is and that's you know goal for next year with everybody returning is We just got to keep the pace the way it was and one statistic that we kind of Kept tracking because it was just odd as I was looking through schedules and stuff like that is I was noticing a Weird trend because that's all I do is find out But in the 22 games that we played the game after teams played us they were 4 and 18 and So to me that's saying okay like they're surviving if they beat you But then they're so tacked from what you just did that it's really hard for them to bounce back the next game Whatever it is and sometimes it's the next night sometimes.

It's tonight sometimes whatever But how the you know the schedule fell whatever teams you know in two of those wins are Carlisle So now you go look at the rest of the scheduling and say only two times it after somebody play us just play us They only want two games after they played us And I think that's a testament to you know what we were doing the teams regardless win-loss the girls were always getting after and that was a Compliment many coaches said throughout the year is that you guys get them to play so hard and you guys do so many good things And that's just something we have to build off of Well, you had to kind of change some things because you did have an unfortunate injury with the Avery Howie Missing the rest of the season it did have to elevate those some other girls To do some things that they probably didn't expect to have to do, but I think it helped like a Morgan I think it helped a Darby.

I think it helped Brooke.

I think it heart helped Harper house to no question in my mind I mean, so if there was anything I guess that positive came out of Avery Missing as much of the seat well pretty much the whole season I think she played four or five games for you But if there's anything good that came out of that coach it was that five other girls I think at least maybe six had to do some different stuff Yeah, and you know, she was Avery's probably gonna be a you know, 20 to 23 minutes Girl for you.

So now and she's you know, one of our more athletic girls getting rebounds and At times was starting to improve her scoring With it that you know, she was averaging, you know for a game early on the season coming off the state So and that she wasn't even in to her full groove yet And then the injury happens.

So like you said a lot of girls had to you know, pick up minutes We had four new starters this year and playing a new style and doing all these different things It took us a little bit to kind of get in rhythm With what we were trying to do.

But yeah, I think a Kyra Darby goes into a starting role from She was you know a girl who didn't see any time last year as a freshman But she worked her tail off in the summer.

She was in in the fall shooting constantly Three Morgan the same thing She went from being a five minute a player To you know averaging four or five a game for us had a big game Where she hit four threes for us In our win, I think it was against Carol or winners that was one of the two where she had four fourth reason that game might have been winners set and Just It's a different world Going from you know, JV speed at times So that's also we're trying to do the style in the JV game too and speed things up because then you're you're ready for a varsity Face the speed is already there I think that was our biggest adjustment from the first half of the season to the second half of the season Was our shooting improved immensely in the second half of the season We were averaging almost six and a half reason game in the second half of the season Which would have put us in close to the top 15 in 4a for three per game But we finally got up to speed with a varsity speed and the speed we were trying to play So it was twofold there that One GB of our sees a different speed and then varsity to what we want to do is a different speed And so now trying to shoot in those environments you have to try to replicate that more and more and that's what we had a more concentrated effort on in practice in the second half of the season once we started getting all the systems down and We were kind of solidified there We were able to do that In the second half of the season and that's what you hope going into the offseason that you kind of get those wrinkles out And so that way when you start next season, you're already Just ready to roar from game one because you've done it now for a year You've had another off season doing it you have your quick hitters.

You have new stats you have all those things ready to go now With you know the 17 18 year old that suited varsity that return well, and you talked about Getting shots better and knocking down some shots and not just improving but you know shot selection and shot Opportunities and I know you threw a stat out me that said listen There's some points out there that if we could average just even this much more Which I don't remember the exact number because when I first thought about it, I was like Alright now wait a second if you all of a sudden put up in 22 games, you know 52 points a game You're gonna win a bunch of those Coach that's not a ton of shots that need to be made, you know more per game It's definitely doable with this squad that's gonna be returning not coming up next winter Yeah, when we broke it down and it boiled down to what we averaged this year if we Improved our free throw percentage to 61 percent when it was, you know, 53 percent Which isn't completely out of the round.

There was a boil down to like 26 free throws Well, that's one a game that you make instead of miss It's one more three a game and then shooting 34 percent from two When you look at class 4a like that's not even in the middle tier.

That's still in kind of the below tier So getting to those It's not that hard With you know some practice and understanding, you know the speed of the game I would would like to think when we were healthy in the second half of the season For that little stretch there when we played some really good basketball I would think that we were probably along those lines and then it's getting possessions up even further We had 300 more possessions this year than we did last year, which is about 15 a game more So four quarters, it may not seem like a lot But when you're talking about pace and all those things if we can even get that up even further next year You don't even have to shoot 34 percent you can shoot 30 percent But now it's just a matter of keep turning teams over keep doing things the way they need to be done And you find yourself in more games and you find yourself winning more games.

That's the main that's the name of the game right there Coaches always thank you so much for some time this past season I know offseason always starts about the day that that's at the season end So we'll look forward to talking the hoops with you coming up in November again Awesome.

Thanks for all the coverage Ryan you bet Cole Corso again joining us boom girls basketball Here on coaches corner
