Coaches Corner for April 2nd: Lance Johnson, Boone Boys Golf

KWBG 04/02/26

Transcript

with us on Coach's Corner here in KWBEG and talk some Boone Boys Golf today Lance Johnson joining us as the Torrey Doris have been going through.

I think this is a great idea and I know other schools have done this Lance and you've got such a roster that has been able to do this. Let's talk about the qualifying rounds that you guys have been able to do because away we go on Monday. Yeah that's right.

You know spring golf is always it's kind of weather dependent and we've been very fortunate to have solid weather to start our season so I told those the kids back at the meeting I think we had in late February that we're going to qualify right away.

We're going to see who put in the work in the offseason. We're seeing who's ready to go and it's just it's constant competition.

Lance I know spring golf is always difficult just because we're you know we come off of good old Iowa winter where we get snowstorms in the middle of golf weeks and all of a sudden we have 90 degree days but tell me about the kids can you tell we put some good work in in the offseason indoors and getting some at least getting a club in our hands.

Yeah absolutely.

We had our first qualifying round it would have been our third day of practice and we had I think that was a 75 degree day so it was great scoring weather and we had you know multiple kids shoot into the 30s which is what you're always looking for and you're not you're not able to do that if you if you haven't touched a club at all golf's just too difficult of a sport to be able to do that.

It was very evident and you know I had kids emailing me in the offseason about they were hitting indoors and kind of some swing tip things so I knew that some of those kids were were putting in the work so I guess I wasn't really surprised to to see how well we started.

Is that the toughest thing though to do Lance is go from being indoors to then finally getting outdoors and having to worry about some wind having to worry about a leaf having to worry about a divot having to worry about some things you didn't have to worry about when you were indoors.

Yeah I mean it's just it's the elements right you've got the the grass that hasn't come in yet so you've got your slower green speeds and like you said you've got the wind might have some heat so you've got some of those external elements that you've got to be able to deal with but that's kind of golf in a nutshell.

All right so it's a youthful roster but you've got kids that were kind of in the wars last year with you Lance I mean I know I'm looking at the roster and it's pretty sophomore maybe I shouldn't say that we got a pretty good junior class too with numbers as well maybe I shouldn't say it's it's you know sophomore heavy but you had a bunch of kids that have gone through the wars with you so far Lance does that feel pretty good even though that the youth is still there?

Yeah absolutely uh last year we had seven kids letter um on our team and we bring back five of those kids so I knew that we were going to have some experience and they're still young but their experience um most of those kids have played in a varsity 18 hole meet or at least a jv varsity meet um so I wasn't too concerned about the the youth that we still have and a lot of these kids are multi-sport athletes so you're getting coached by other people um you know varsity athletes and other sports so I knew mentally that excuse me mentally they were going to be ready to go.

All right so obviously getting outside like I talked about the the weather has been a little strange here the first couple of weeks for golf Lance tell me what have you guys been able to do I know you've got out for your challenge matches and whatnot so obviously we're getting outside you've had some decent days in there but what have you been able to learn from what's a pretty large roster?

Yeah we've been we've been able to get outside um every day so far which is fantastic um we've just got a wide range of abilities you know we've got some freshmen that are you know they're playing golf for the first time and then we've got kids all the way up to seniors that have just kind of been buying their way in the program so uh if we're not you know if we're not doing a qualifying round some some practices I have are very structured uh last week we had like we did four different rotations and three of those were a short game and one was putting and then yesterday it was just kind of a it's a what I need practice what you've had three qualifying rounds what do you individually need to do um as a golfer because that's the biggest thing we've got 32 kids on the on the roster and we've got 32 different swings and 32 different short games so you know I'm trying to teach these kids that golf is is just so much on your own and I'm here to to help you with the basics um trying to be the sports psychologist so to speak um help you out with some things that I've learned along the way but really it's just it's kind of weather dependent and it's just kind of course dependent also how how busy is the course and you know what do we have to work around we have the course to ourselves so honestly just kind of a day by day mix up of what we do if monday's a good weather day and everything you know is fine obviously it's going to be a little chilly because it's iowa spring we don't always get lucky with the you know 80 degree days what are you expecting to see lanskey give me a couple of things you'd like to see that first competition out i know we always want to shoot a low score and you want your kids to all be close to medalists that's not always realistic though but what do you want to see lance give me a couple things i think it's just consistency you know um you've had your three qualifying rounds can you can you shoot similar scores in an actual competition meet where it counts you know we we want to have the whole goal and what makes these teams so successful is they're they're one through six players consistent um and they're just kind of a steady eddy out on the course you know something bad's going to happen during a round where uh you get a bad lie um you get a bad bounce somewhere what's what's your mentality going to be i was talking to the guys yesterday i said there's no time out in golf nope i can't i can't call a time out for you like we can another sport so you've got to be able to kind of figure that out so i guess the biggest thing um i'm looking for is kind of what's the what's the mental resolve of our team going to be if something doesn't go their way i didn't get a chance to ask you about this last year so i'll finish with this one with you lance because i know that golf has been a big part of your life obviously since high school when you played and now you know playing recreational is it tough when you're out there walking the course not to want to pick up a club and grab a wedge or grab a putter and get out there and just you know a little something while you're on the course watching yeah it is it is not usually i've uh i've usually got my my clubs in the truck and uh you know sometimes uh it's a good problem to have where some of these kids are overly confident so uh sometimes you just got to get the clubs out and kind of uh bring them back down to earth a little bit i love to hear that lance i'm hoping for great weather for you here this spring best of luck on monday we'll talk to you in a couple of weeks yep absolutely appreciate it you've atlance johnson and joining us boom boys golf here in coach's corner
