KWBG 05/07/26

Katherine Uthe, 95, Boone, Iowa

BOONE, Iowa—Katherine Lenora Masterson Uthe died the morning of Monday, May 4, 2026, at the age of 95 in Boone, Iowa. Born on March 18, 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri, Kate grew up in Boone and graduated from Sacred Heart School.

Services are in care of Adams Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 10:00 with a visitation at 9:00. A private interment at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

After meeting George Uthe at a Knights of Columbus dance, they married in 1950 and made their home on a farm in Boone County. Kate always wanted to have a large family after growing up as an only child and together they welcomed eight children into the world. She cherished gatherings with her large family even into her last years. She was first in line at every opportunity to tell old stories, eat good food, and laugh together.

Kate’s Catholic faith was deeply important to her and she was active in every parish she belonged to including Saint Malachy in Madrid, Good Shepherd in Jewell, and Saint Cecilia in Ames. In her later years she returned to childhood parish, Sacred Heart in Boone. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Circle, Catholic Daughters, and Legion of Mary.

She continued to be active throughout her life. For over a decade Kate worked as a student’s aide in the South Hamilton Community School District. She took exercise classes, participated in groups at church, and enjoyed listening to audiobooks. She dearly loved her canine companions over the years, Ginger, Allie, and Oliver.

Kate was ornery, honest, blunt, and headstrong. She was also always ready to have fun, go out to a nice restaurant, get together with friends and family, and enjoy the finer things of life. Kate’s most favorite thing was to be together and celebrate with the people she loved.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family.

Kate is survived by her children Steve Uthe, Tom (Jodie) Uthe, Janet (Rick) Young, Mary Kay (Clint) Steele, Pat (Mark) Butler, and Jim (Cathy) Uthe, 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Kate was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, children, Chuck and Peggy, and grandchildren, Jonathan, Isaac, and Regina.
