JoAnn Hicks, 85, Boone, Iowa
BOONE, Iowa—JoAnn Hicks, 85, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Westhaven Community in Boone.
JoAnn was born December 8, 1941, in Stanhope, Iowa, the daughter of Ivan and Edna (Allen) Grasso. She attended school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1960 and went onto attended Boone Junior College.
While growing up JoAnn had a horse named Brandi, she enjoyed riding and was a member of 4-H. JoAnn was very crafty and artistic; she painted numerous pictures. She was married to Richard Hicks for 20 years and to this union, four children were born.
JoAnn helped her parents and brother run the family business, the Daniel Boone Sports Shop. In her later years, she loved attending events at the Beckwith Center in Boone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Edna Grasso; an uncle, Tony Grasso and an aunt, Ruth Lee.
JoAnn is survived by her brother, Gary Grasso of Boone; her four children, Sheryl (John) Elliott of Henderson, NV, Diane (Jeff Ware) Hicks of Fullerton, CA, Kristine (Ken) Hession of Orange County, CA, and John (Dori) Hicks of Long Beach, CA; her nine grandchildren, Jillian McCord, Jessica Ware, Kara Elliott, Todd Elliott, Aylish Hession, Quinton Hession, Daniel Hicks, Justin Hicks and Matthew Hicks; a niece, Mary Beth (Tom) Kos and a nephew, David (Angie) Grasso.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Adam Gordon officiating at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Saturday. Burial is in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Boone.
