
The Madrid baseball team’s season came to an end Tuesday, July 7, as Ankeny Christian held off the Tigers for an 8-7 victory in a Class 1A Substate 3 contest at North Polk Middle School Baseball Field.
Emerson Bridgewater had four hits, including a double, while scoring a run and driving in three RBIs.
Eli Peterson added a hit and an RBI, while Kole Deppe, Will Atkinson, Levi Kockler, Mason Moorman, and Brady Springer all crossed the plate.
Springer scored twice for Madrid.
Bridgewater also got the start on the mound and took the loss despite recording three strikeouts.
Conner Pettiecord provided solid relief work, striking out four batters.
The defeat closed the book on Madrid’s season with an 11-18 overall record and a 7-13 mark in the West Central Activities Conference.
For the season, Bridgewater and Deppe paced the team offensively with 29 hits each, while Kolbie Owens finished with 25 hits and McCoy Cooley added 22 hits.
Bridgewater also led the team with 24 RBIs, followed closely by Deppe with 21 RBIs.
On the mound, Zach Newell led Madrid with three victories.
Bridgewater, Kockler, and Pettiecord each earned two wins during the season.
Kockler topped the Tigers’ pitching staff in strikeouts with 41, while Bridgewater recorded 35 strikeouts and Pettiecord added 32.
