The Boone football team battled through a back-and-forth game Friday, September 4, scoring the game’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter to escape with a 13-12 victory over Perry at Goeppinger Field in Boone.
The Toreadors remain unbeaten at 2-0 on the season.
The Toreadors struck first in the opening quarter when senior running back Maddox McIntyre found the end zone on a rushing touchdown.
Boone converted the extra point with Noel Malin’s kick, taking a 7-0 lead.
After a scoreless second quarter, Perry surged ahead in the third.
The Bluejays scored two touchdowns, but a pair of failed two-point conversion attempts left the door open for Boone.
Instead of leading by a wider margin, Perry held only a 12-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Boone capitalized in the final quarter when McIntyre delivered once again, breaking through for his second rushing touchdown of the night, putting the Toreadors back in front.
Boone’s two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but the touchdown proved to be the difference as the defense held on for the one-point win.
A key defensive play came late in the fourth quarter with Perry heading toward its end zone.
Braxton Gifford intercepted a pass in the Perry red zone, halting the Bluejays’ scoring threat and giving the ball back to Boone to close out the victory.
McIntyre led the Boone offense with 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Quarterback Ashten Petersen added 65 rushing yards on seven carries while completing 1 of 8 passes for 11 yards.
Ryder Hilsabeck hauled in Boone’s lone reception for 11 yards.
The Toreador defense played a major role in preserving the victory.
RJ Lennon paced the unit with 13 total tackles.
Javier Casiano contributed 8.5 tackles and two tackles for loss, while Fawkes Schroeder recorded 6.5 tackles.
Anthony Heenan added 5.5 tackles, Romero Young had 5 tackles, and Silas Jungck finished with five tackles and a tackle for loss.
Jonathan Van Roekel made 4.5 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.
Boone improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Perry fell to 0-2.
The Toreadors return home on Friday, September 11, when they host Gilbert (1-1) at Goeppinger Field.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the evening will also serve as Youth and Middle School Football Night.
