Boone volleyball opens West Marshall tourney with victory

The Boone volleyball team earned its first win of the season Thursday, September 3, defeating host West Marshall in straight sets, 2-0, in the opening round of the West Marshall Tournament in State Center.

The Boone volleyball team earned its first win of the season Thursday, September 3, defeating host West Marshall in straight sets, 2-0, in the opening round of the West Marshall Tournament in State Center. 

Setter Halle Johnson directed the Boone attack with 10 assists while also contributing two kills, three digs, and going 3-for-3 from the service line.  

Taylor Engnell added two assists and led the defensive effort with eight digs. 

Boone received a balanced offensive performance as Claire Hardinger and Ava Johnson shared the team lead with three kills apiece.  

Jenna Murray, Hailee Bingham, and Halle Johnson each added two kills. 

The Toreadors were effective behind the service line, finishing with a 90 percent team serving percentage.  

Hardinger paced the serving attack with three aces while going 12-for-12 on serves.  

Engnell added one ace and was 6-for-6 serving, while Harper Boyd was a perfect 2-for-2 from the service line. 

Defensively, Boone was led by Engnell’s eight digs, while Karsyn Smith collected six digs. 

Ava Landas and Hardinger each finished with four digs. 

Following the opening-round victory, Boone dropped its next two tournament matches, falling 2-0 to Prairie City-Monroe and 2-0 to South Tama County.  

Statistics from those matches were not available as of early Tuesday afternoon, and game summaries will be published when information becomes available. 

Boone will host Ballard (4-2) on Thursday night in its home opener and first Raccoon River Conference match of the season. 

The game will be broadcast on KWBG, FM 101.5, AM 1590 and will stream on kwbglive.com with sports director Ryan Wendt on the call.
