KWBG Senior Spotlight: Sophie Seligman, Ogden Senior

KWBG 10/02/26

Transcript

With us on our senior spotlight on KWBG, we're heading to Ogden today to get a chance to talk to Sophie Slickman about being a senior and what homecoming week has been like. And she's officially now been a senior for a month, believe it or not, Sophie. I know you're probably looking at the counter and going, how is that possible? But hey, congratulations, you made it a month. How about that? 100%. Thank you. It's super crazy. It felt like I've only been in school for like a week. Tell us about what the senior year's been like so far because you've kept yourself busy. We'll start with just school because when we got to talk about sports and musical and core and everything, I mean, you got a bunch of stuff going on, but how has class work been going? It's been going really good. Like I said earlier, I have DMACS in my morning and then I have classes in the afternoon and it's been really great. My classes have been really fun. And yeah, schools have been, it's probably been one of my best academic years, I would say so far. Okay. So is a schedule pretty full? Is it packed? What do you got going on for classes? So my first three periods, like I said, DMACC and then when I come back to the school, I have choir and then my other periods are also full. So I have pretty much a full schedule. Now, Sophie, you realize you're supposed to take not a full schedule your senior year, right? Yes, that is true. But honestly, anything to make my GPA look better for colleges. Oh, we take that. We take that. So Sophie, tell me, favorite class, if I made you pick just one that you're taking here first semester, what do you think you'd pick? Oh, that's a hard question. I would say probably either my DMACC comp class or my anatomy and physiology class. Those are so fun and interesting to me. I'm going to tell you the anatomy one I would not have guessed, but everybody that I've talked to, I swear loves DMACC comp. What is so good about that class? You got to give me the behind the scenes of that one. I would just say first off, of course, our teacher, Mrs. Myers, she is so awesome, so phenomenal. She really cares about the students like to interact with them and she just makes class not feel so like we need to get this done and I have to do this. It's just really awesome how she talks things with us. And then obviously I have all my friends are in my class, so it makes it even better. Sometimes we get a little too silly and we talk a lot, but it's really awesome. I'm stunned you would say that, Sophie. I figured you guys just sat in the front and nobody ever spoke, but okay, I guess I'll believe that you guys get a little silly sometimes. Well, okay, now besides obviously that we've got school that's going on, we've got a little other things too. We've got a lot of other activities that we're doing, including cross country that's going on right now. Tell me about cross country season. Oh my gosh, cross country. It's been pretty good. We started early August and basically we just had a meet on Monday, which our home meet, which is really exciting. That's been a really good season. We've had a lot of new girls this year, so a really pretty fresh team, but it's really great how everyone's just coming together, working harder. And yeah, I would just say like cross country is just so awesome and so fun and it's just been really good this year. I gotta tell you, Sophie, that's one of the most difficult sports. There's a couple others I'd put up there, but cross country's got to be one of them because to get ready for cross country, Sophie, let's be honest, you got to go out and run a lot. How about when it comes to, if you're trying to get somebody to go out for cross country and they say, Sophie, all you do is run, tell them, tell them, why would you get them to go out for cross country? Tell them, give them the good news because I know cross country is a lot more than just that. I would say we have one of the best team atmospheres like out of all the sports. I will, I'll be cocky about that. I think we honestly have one of the best team atmospheres and we're always doing stuff together and it's honestly, it is so much more than just running and you know, having to do your workout. It's about putting in the effort together, doing it together, wanting to surround yourself with, you know, the people around you and it's just like, it's so awesome because it, like having people with you who, you know, are ready to get better, ready to have fun, it's so much better than just, oh, I have to run, you know, five miles. It makes it a lot easier. Plus you have a pretty fun coach too, don't you? Do you got any good Kabliska stories for me, Sophie? Kabliska, he is awesome. He is a character. I would say, I would say all of our coaches are definitely some of the greatest people I have ever met and some of the best coaches I have ever worked with. Kabliska, he is just awesome. He kind of seems a little shy at first and you know, not very talkative, but when you get him talking, you build that connection. He's just, it's awesome. Oh boy, he's going to be mad. You told his secrets, I think, Sophie. Hey, you have another coach that's kind of a character too and that was, well, he'd be your wrestling coach. Tell me about coach McLeod a little bit because him and I like to have a lot of fun on coaches' corners. What's he like in the wrestling room? Oh my gosh, I would have to say, probably the same thing, you know, I think he likes to seem a little, you know, like intimidating and maybe like a little scary and serious, but honestly, coach McLeod is one of the sweetest people I have ever met and he is like a big teddy bear. He cares about you. He cares about how you're doing and he's awesome. He's a fun guy. Like I would say going inside wrestling room, you're ready to get serious, but it is so fun and he is just, he's awesome. I love it. Boy, you also told secrets on Scott too. So now I am in big trouble. Two coaches said they were both quiet, but they're both a little, well, we know Scott is definitely talking to us for sure. Sophie, tell me about rest of your senior year. Give me some things you're looking forward to. I know you're right in the middle of one right now with homecoming week that's going on, but what else are you looking forward to your senior year? I'm definitely looking forward to committing to a college. I've been doing a few college visits, so I'm really excited for that, but I'm really excited just to go into all my other sports too and just spend the last year with my friends and just have like those last high school experiences. So yeah, I'm super excited. All right. So you told, you said committing to a college. So, so give me some front runners here. So if we were, where are we thinking about going and what are we thinking about doing when we get there? I am currently split between three colleges, Buena Vista, Northwestern and Mount Mercy. I want to go into nursing for both of them and maybe running. I've talked to all of your coaches and that would be, you know, definitely a big thing for me to do track and cross-countrying college. So yeah, that'd be really exciting. Boy, Sophie, you just gave three really good colleges. Normally, I would, if you gave me a couple, I'd be able to help you. Sophie, I got nothing. I don't think you're going to go wrong, Sophie. I've seen and been to all three campuses. I don't think you can go wrong on any of them. Oh no, there are beautiful campuses and they're awesome. And I think they all have really good academic programs and same with athletic programs and just student life there. So it's definitely going to be a hard, hard one to boil down to. So, Sophie, you got so much stuff going on and then you piled on something else new this year. And I thought maybe you had done it in the past and maybe I had just missed that you had done this, but you are doing something brand new this year. You got to tell me about the musical and how you just decided, hey, it's my senior year. Why not? Let's do it. And you're doing it. Yeah. So I've never been musical before. I was thinking about doing it last year, but then I was like, I do a fall sport. That's kind of hard to juggle around. But then I was talking to one of my best friends, Clara. She was like, you know, you should just do it. It's fun and she is very musical and she loves it. And I was like, I'll just try it out. Like, I'm already doing a million things. What's one more thing to add? So I decided to do it. It has been so fun. I love it. Like, and I already do choir, so I'm already singing and stuff, but it is, it is so awesome. So fun. It is kind of hard to juggle sometimes because I go from cross country practice to musical practice, which can sometimes end around 9pm. But honestly, it is like the people. It's always the people that just make it better. And it's really fun. Well, and plus we didn't mention either that besides the fact that Sophie's in the musical, she got some lines too, huh? Sophia, a couple of lines at least. Oh, yes. I have a whole three lines. I'm the policewoman and then I'm also just, you know, like a background character. So yeah, making my debut. There you go. I'm going to have some musicals. So yeah, super exciting. Sophie the cop and Sophie the background person. We love it. That's going to be a lot of fun. Well, Sophie, thank you so much for giving us some time here on our Senior Spotlight. Best of luck the rest of your senior year. We'll be watching. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. You bet. Sophie Sligman again joining us. Senior at Ogden on our Senior Spotlight.
