KWBG Senior Spotlight: Audrey Brown, Madrid Senior

KWBG 10/30/26

Transcript

with us on our senior spotlight on KWBG. We're heading to Madrid again tonight to have a chance to talk to Audrey Brown, senior at Madrid. And we were just kind of visiting off air. And I guess let's just talk about it now, Audrey, what we were kind of visiting about. And we were talking a lot about softball because I know softball has been really big for you for a long time now. You said you got into this like when you're around 10, huh? Yeah, I started playing high level softball when I was about 10 years old for Iowa Premier. And we started traveling to like Omaha and Kansas City. And then I was like, yeah, I really like this. And it kind of just picked up from there. Okay, so at 10 years old, let's be honest, there's a whole lot of stuff that you like, right? There's there's a ton of stuff pulling you here and there. Why was softball? Why did softball kind of jump up and say to you, Audrey, come come hang out with me for a while? I would say I just liked like being able to have like my thing. Like I'm always like the type of person that has one thing. And once I have it, I just go with it. And I just started hitting and I was like, I really like this and that it got carried away. And here I am. Well, you and I had a chance to talk about this off air. And I know coach done done and I talked about this last season, but you had not played for Madrid your first couple of years in high school. And then all of a sudden junior year, you kind of started getting tugged toward maybe wanting to play. Yeah, Audrey, take us through that. How did that all happen? So obviously early on, like, it's hard because mad or like I was the only state that plays high school softball in the summer. And summer time is very heavy recruiting time for college coaches. Like you go to these big tournaments and all the college coaches are at. So the longest time is kind of like you're either getting recruited and looked at by like high coaches or you're playing high school. So my brain I was like, I got to go to be at these big tournaments and get looks. And then I finally committed. And I was like, you know, it's time to come home and play with all my friends. Alright, so take me through that then because I know coach was pretty excited to get you. He I think he probably would admit this right now. But but tell me but tell me what was it like when you first went into coach done and said, Hey, I want to play this summer. You know, I was nervous because I'd always been like scared to kind of like dabble in it a little bit kind of just like live up to the expectation. But he was very welcoming to be like, we want you, we want like your support, we want your leadership and first practice came along and I felt right in felt right at home. So everybody was so welcoming and everybody I've grown up with all these girls. So it was really nice. I got to play with my little sister. Like it was just awesome. Mr. Dunn was great the whole time. And I loved every second of it. And I heard Maisie had something to do with that too, huh? Kind of threw you in the office and drug me. I was in Mr. Douglas's class. She drugged me out and she's like, we're going to talk to Mr. Dunn right now. And I was like, all right, I guess we're going. Hey, when a teammate drags you, Audrey, it kind of feels, I think that probably feels pretty good, doesn't it? Yeah. And me and Maisie, we're like best friends. We are each other's like go to like we do the same sports, same everything. So one goes do something. The other one's right there with there. So I was like, she's one of my best friends. I'll do it. Like she's a very hard working girl and I love and respect her so much. So I was like, I'll do this with you. Like she was a main, a main reason I chose to go out. I love that. I love that. All right, let's talk school for a little bit because I always get in trouble when I talk too much athletics. So I always say, okay, don't worry, I'll talk academics too. So tell me about school year so far. Audrey, how's it been going? School year's going really good. I'm normally here just like in the mornings and I have my like three core classes, then I go over to elementary school and I mentor preschoolers. So I'm at the elementary for a few hours throughout the day. And then usually after that, I go on and go to practice. But school's going on taking some college classes through G-Mac right now and just trying to get my baseline classes out of the way. And it's pretty easy, pretty fun. Audrey, take me to be in a mentor. That's a pretty cool gig. How did you get started in that? How'd you get interested in it? So I signed up last year to be a part of the YSS mentoring program. And you basically just get assigned like a class or a student. So I go over to the elementary every day and I hang out with the preschool class and I just get to work with them and interact with them. And it's really fun. I like working with kids. And I love kids a lot. So I enjoy that. And I like when kids are able to like connect with me. And I really enjoy hanging out with the little kids. Okay, now is this a future thing? Or is this just Audrey Brown right now thing? I'm not sure because I want to in college I want to major in psychology and work with people like I've always wanted to work and help people. So I'm not exactly sure where that path will take me. But I know for sure in the future I want to work with people and just help people in general. Well, we know we have a little piece of that future kind of done Audrey, because you do have a college you're going to, which is always cool when I get a chance to talk to my seniors and they know what they want to do. You know where you're going. Tell me where you're going next fall. So I'm going to the University of Maine and I'll play softball there and I'm really excited. I love everything about the university and my coaching staff and the players. It's awesome. And I couldn't be more excited about where I blame it. And I like out of words of how to express how excited I am for the next chapter. Well, and you told me something else too. And I'm a little jealous that because fall is my favorite time of the year. So we were talking about Maine a little bit off air. And I said, so, so I bet the campus is kind of average. And I obviously was joking about that. This campus is pretty awesome, huh? Yeah, so we're 30 minutes from Acadia National Park, which is beautiful as it is. And then fun fact, our campus is like technically on an island because we're surrounded by two rivers. So it's like your own little area. And it's just beautiful. Like, it's literally known for its area and how perfect it is. It gets a little cold in the winter. I'm not talking alive, but right now it's perfect. Audrey, it gets cold here in the winter. You're gonna be used to that, right? Yeah, I'm already adapted to that. Yeah, I bet you are. Okay, so senior year, we talked about school, obviously, we talk about what's coming up after school. What are we looking forward to? We still got a lot of school left to go. There's some other stuff, Audrey, you're kind of looking forward to here senior year. I'm really excited for basketball season. Like, we have a really special group of girls that are coming up. And I think this might be the year we made really big progress last year don't be wrong, but I think this might be the year we click. We've had girls in the gym constantly running, conditioning, lifting. Coach Adams is really heart on us about being in the gym, being together, working together. And I think it's gonna pay off really well this year. And all the girls are really great. They're really committed to it. And I think it'll be a really good season for us. So I'm really excited for basketball that's coming up here soon. All right, Audrey, I'm going to put you on the spot because this is always the most difficult question when it comes to the basketball staff. What's their best themed night that they've had so far? Guys are because they've had some good ones, Audrey. I got it. And I hate you know me. I hate giving credit to Kelvin, but I got to they've had some pretty good theme nights. Yeah, I'd say the Flintstones is pretty good. I agree. I agree. I agree. I don't know. I feel like they come out with some interesting things and out of pocket things like I'm worried for my senior night this year on what they're gonna pull out.

As you should be probably, Audrey, as you know, I was gonna say the Flintstones one to me is still spectacular. And again, me giving Kelvin compliments, this hurts my soul. So just know that. Audrey, I'm gonna let you go with one last question. I always like to get perspective when it comes to advice. And so, Audrey, if a freshman came up to you and said, Hey, I want to have a great four years at Madrid, give him a piece of advice. What do you think you might tell him to do? I would say just embrace everything. Go to all the games. Go out for every sport you think you might like, you won't know how much you really like something until you just go for it. And once you do it, just go all in and really embrace everything that you're doing. And don't try to rush right through it. Because when I was a freshman, I was like, I just want to get out of here. I want to go to college. And now I'm a senior and I'm like, dang, like, I wish I would have done more. I wish I would embrace it a little bit more. So just go all in and enjoy every second of it. No, it's great advice, great advice. Audrey, thank you so much for some time. And just congratulations on a fantastic senior year. And I know we'll talk again soon. All right, thank you. You bet. Audrey Brown again, joining us senior at Madrid on our senior spotlight.
