KWBG 03/03/21

BOONE, Iowa—With commodity prices up significantly over the last several years, ISU Extension and Outreach is looking to help increase producer knowledge of grain merchandising.  Patrick Hatting, ISU Extension Farm Management Specialist will lead the next Ag Marketing Club meeting in Boone County on Monday, March 8th.  The meeting is held at the Leonard Good Community Center in Ogden, 114 SW 8th Street.  The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

For COVID-19 planning, pre-registration is required.  Those interested should contact Alexis Stevens at the Boone County Extension Office at 515-432-3882 or by email ahooper@iastate.edu.

Some of topics will be:

  • Basis contract, buying futures and a put or call option
  • Delayed and minimum price contracts
  • Spot cash sale and a forward cash contract
  • Hedge, hedge to arrive contract and the difference from a forward cash contract

The focus will be on the finding out how a grain merchandiser can help individual farm businesses.  Find out how tracking the local basis and the futures price can help in building confidence about marketing grain.  Also, a market simulation exercise is being planned for this Ag Marketing Club meeting.
