Allan Neely

KWBG 01/20/22

BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for Allan (Al) Rae Neely, age 75, passed away at his home in Ankeny, Iowa with his family by his side.

Al was born in Ames, IA on February 15, 1946, to Clyde (Bill) Neely and Florence (Punk) Neely and was raised in Boone, IA. He was the oldest of three children.

Al was a graduate of Boone High School. He played football, basketball, baseball, and track in school. He coached Little League as well as played Semi-Pro Baseball in Boone, and in Japan while in the Air Force.

Al served two tours in Viet Nam as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, discharging in December 1973.

On April 2, 1977, he married the love of his life, Margie Headley, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Boone, IA. They are the proud parents of Ross Allan Neely.

Al graduated as a Registered Nurse, initially working as a Nurse Manager of the Emergency Room at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, IA. He later worked as the Director of the Emergency Room at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital (later Mayo Health System) in Mankato, MN, and implemented multiple initiatives to bring equitable, compassionate, contemporary care to the Southwest Minnesota Region. Following this, he worked in the Emergency Department at the River’s Edge Hospital in Saint Peter, MN prior to retiring.

Al was certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Trauma Nurse Life Support, and belonged to the Emergency Nurses Association. He got great satisfaction in teaching the Advanced Trauma Courses to ER nurses in multiple hospitals in MN. Al worked as a nurse in emergency medicine for over 35 years.

Al’s love for his family was most important to him and provided the most joy. He enjoyed watching his son play in all sports, never missing a game. Al loved playing league softball and bowling for many years. He cherished spending time with his mother and her sisters, his brothers, cousins, nieces/nephews, and in-laws, and watching football games with Ross. Everyone who knew Al knew he enjoyed polishing and working on his cars.

Most of all, Al loved Margie and Ross. They loved to travel to Iowa and often took trips with other family members to Florida.

Al was preceded in death by his father Clyde (Bill) Neely and brother Ronald (Ronnie) Neely.

Survivors: wife Margie in Ankeny, IA; son Ross in Ankeny, IA; daughter Amber; mother Florence (Punk) of Boone, IA; brother Rick (Karen) of Ames, IA; sister-in-law Denise of West Palm Beach, FL; brother-in-law Paul (Julie) Headley of Elkhart, IA; brother-in-law Mike (Christine) Headley of Springfield, MO.

Aunts: Margaret Pfrimmer of Boone, IA; Diane Kost of Ames, IA; Delores Miller of Boone, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Allan’s body was cremated. A visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, followed by a short memorial celebration of Allan’s life with military honors at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers/plants, memorial donations will be made by the family to Al’s preferred charities.
