Alliant and Fareway Team Together on Solar Project

KWBG 10/20/21

BOONE, Iowa—Alliant Energy and Fareway Stores, Inc. announce a collaboration to install a 1-megawatt solar facility in the Boone Industrial Park on a six-acre site adjacent to Fareway’s campus in Boone, Iowa.

“For decades, Fareway has recognized the importance of conserving natural resources and reducing our carbon footprint,” said Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer. “The partnership with Alliant Energy is another way we can make great strides in positively impacting our environment. We appreciate the opportunity to host this solar project and bring clean energy to the communities we serve.”

The newly announced solar facility accelerates Alliant Energy’s sustainability goals to eliminate all coal from their generation fleet by 2040 and achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity they generate by 2050.

“We are excited to partner with Fareway, and bring additional clean energy to our Iowa customers as part of our Clean Energy Blueprint,” said Terry Kouba, president of Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility. “We take great pride in delivering safe, clean, reliable and resilient energy to our customers.  Partnering with companies like Fareway to develop solar projects is just another way we build stronger communities and keep our customers at the heart of everything we do.”

The solar facility will be located on undeveloped land Fareway owns on the western edge of their distribution center in the Boone Industrial Park. For decades, Fareway has implemented innovative sustainability methods to better serve its customers. The renewable energy project with Alliant Energy offers yet another way the company demonstrates its commitment to the environment.

Alliant Energy will oversee construction of the solar facility and will own, operate and maintain it. Alliant Energy anticipates the facility could be operational by the end of 2022. Project construction and timeline is contingent on survey results, permitting, regulatory changes and equipment supply.

“By providing these additional opportunities for partnerships in Iowa, we’re not only building local engagement, but also delivering clean energy solutions that have a direct benefit for our customers,” said Mason Adams, Alliant Energy’s Key Account Manager. “Our renewable programs in Iowa are increasing in popularity as customers seek renewable solutions that meet personal or business interests.  We applaud Fareway for their leadership and collaboration on this project as it will provide a local renewable energy source, along with the environmental benefits for the community.”

The Alliant Energy® Customer Hosted Renewables Program enables customers with available land to host solar facilities and receive lease payments and renewable energy credits. It is part of Alliant Energy’s Clean Energy Vision to attain net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity it generates by 2050.
