MADRID, Iowa—A “Shelter in Place Order” was issued for Madrid residents Tuesday evening due to leaking anhydrous tanks in a field southwest of the community. Winds were pushing the toward the city leading to the emergency order. Boone County Emergency Management was at the scene and provided this report on their Facebook page:
Boone County Emergency Management responded this evening to a hazardous materials incident involving a large anhydrous ammonia leak south of Madrid near 13037 Y Ave.
At 7:18 PM, our office was notified by Boone County Dispatch and responded to the scene. After coordinating with Madrid Fire Incident Command and Iowa Homeland Security, we issued a Shelter in Place order for residents within a 1.5-mile radius of the spill via a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) at 7:37 PM.
During the incident we:
Coordinated with Des Moines Haz-Mat upon their arrival and confirmed their mitigation plan.
Notified the Iowa DNR of the spill at 8:07 PM.
Maintained communication with County Auditor Diane Patrick regarding Madrid’s polling location.
Worked with Sheriff Andy Godzicki on public information releases and updates to state officials.
At 8:31 PM, Des Moines Haz-Mat advised the area was safe and the Shelter in Place order was lifted. Boone County Emergency Management remained on scene to support agency coordination and cleared at 8:40 PM.
