BOONE, Iowa—A 26 year old Ankeny man was taken to the Boone County Hospital Sunday afternoon after he sustained a gun shot wound while hunting northwest of Boone. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department reports that incident occurred right before 4:00 p.m. at a rock quarry area near 188th Road. There were four hunters with permission to hunt on the grounds. According to information at this time, the four were positioned around a deer located at a lower elevation. When the hunters began to fire, the deer began to climb and gained elevation. As the hunters continued to fire upon the deer, they raised their guns which led to one hunter shooting Muhmoud Chabayta. The Boone County Communication Center was notified. The members of the hunting party felt the wound was not serious and transported Chabayta to the Boone County Hospital by a private vehicle.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Boone County Hospital and later returned to the scene to conduct its investigation which remains ongoing. Charges could be pending. There is no update on Chabayta’s condition.
