Arlen Shafer

BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for Arlen D. Shafer, age 77, of Boone, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Arlen was born June 7, 1944, in Seattle, Washington, the son of Jacob and Goldie (Russell) Shafer. He graduated from Open Bible College, with a bachelor’s degree in Theology.

Arlen was united in marriage to Judy Heasley on June 14, 1968, in Onida, South Dakota. He was a very dedicated husband and always spoke of his love for her.

Arlen’s life calling was to be a Pastor, and he ministered at churches in Illinois, Wyoming, Wisconsin and his last stop was in Boone. He started working in 1981 at the Woodward Academy in Woodward, Iowa, from 1981, until his retirement on December 27, 2006.

Arlen was a member of the Open Bible Church in Boone, where he was a visitation pastor chaplain at the local hospitals and head of hospitality.

He had a quick wit, loved practical jokes, a funny, forgiving, vibrant, and loving man of God, who was a lifelong learner and was always reading.

Arlen would tell his children, “Don’t tell the others you are my favorite,” he always went to his grandchildren’s events and was best known for his well-done mini hamburgers.

Arlen is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Shafer of Boone; daughter, Angie MacDonald of Tucson, Arizona; daughter, Anissa (Chris) Hoskins of Montrose, Colorado; son, Alan Shafer of Tucson, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Brody Hoskins, Joshua Hoskins, Mikayla Hoskins, Ty Hoskins, Keri MacDonald, Lane MacDonald and Kylie Shafer; and one great grandson, Jackson Reed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Bourlet; and son-in-law, Bill MacDonald.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, November 8, 2021, at the Open Bible Church, 1224 Hancock Drive, Boone, Iowa. Burial will be at Bass Point Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Boone Open Bible Church.

Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets is in charge of the arrangements.
