With us on Coach's Corner on KWBG, going to talk some boom girls track. Head coach Bill Castle joining us. Tori Dors, well, have been trying to get into some meets.
Bill, you've been in meets, you've had them scheduled, they're ready to go, and then Mother Nature's won again, huh? Yeah, unfortunately, that's the case early this season.
Our first outdoor meet at Carroll, we got completed, and that was a very cold night, but we got it completed, completed while they're finished second to a good Glenwood squad.
And then the following Monday, on the 30th, we went to Bondurant, and it was an 80-degree day, and it got halfway through the meet, and we got some lightening delayed for a half hour, started it back up, and then about another half hour later, lightening wiped the rest of the meet out.
So we were competitive in that meet as well. We were in second place at that time, and probably would have finished out in second place on that one, too. So we lost a couple of meets, but we're looking to have a couple of good opportunities this week.
Well, I'll tell you what, the couple that I wanted to talk about right away, and this was something I think you and I talked about in the preseason. That could be something pretty decent.
I know I talked to Cass a couple of times about this as well, but boy, that four by eight coach, if we have everybody healthy and I still think we're going to drop more time as the season progresses, that might be a real fun relay to keep an eye out here in the month of May.
Yes, definitely. I was just looking at that earlier this morning, too, and running Bondurant, we ran 1057, and then at Carroll, we ran 1052. So if we can drop five to 10 seconds per runner, that makes a huge difference, and that would be fun to watch as the season progresses.
Well, and it just kind of feels like with the girls that are in that four by eight, and granted something, you know, things can change a little bit, too, and maybe somebody else pops in there.
But with the four you've got in there right now, Bill, I believe they will drop some time. I don't think that 1052 is going to be your PR for the season. Oh, I hope not. Yeah, I hope we get down into the 1020s and maybe even a little bit better than that.
So it'll be great to watch. I think as those athletes get a little bit more conditioning and we get better weather, some good competition, they won't take much to drop that a little bit.
Yeah, and besides the four by eight, I wanted to go right away then and talk about that distance medley team, because that also feels like something that we could watch as the season progresses. And I think that's going to drop a bunch of time, too.
And I know it's kind of interesting just because you go from the four by eight and then talk about distance medley. But I kind of feel like all of a sudden kind of the distance girls are kind of stepping it up right now for you. They are.
And it's really nice to have a good number of those. And they're all good quality distance runners as well from the 800 up to the 3000. And on that distance medley, you know, the two key legs on that are the four and the 800.
And you got to have about a 230 or sub 230 800 meter runner to make that competitive, you know, when you think about state qualification and things like that. So 220 would be even better. And that would be really great to see.
So hopefully we can get those those kids to that level and make that an event that we can maybe look forward to qualifying a state for. Well, and I don't want the sprinters to think that I'm dogging on them because I saw the four by two has done a nice job sprint medley.
The shuttle hurdle, I think, has got a real opportunity to do some fun stuff.
So sprinters, I'm not dogging on you because I feel like you got a pretty good crop of girls that can run and do a real nice job when it comes not just to open spill, but I really think you can pull together some pretty good relays too. Yeah, and they're working hard on it.
And it'd be really nice to see if we could get, you know, some meats under our belt a little bit so they can kind of see their progress. You know, sprinting sprinting is is a lot of technical work.
And our kids are really starting to adapt to what we're doing for them or what we're trying to get them to do on the on the sprinting side. So I think those those times will be dropping a little bit incrementally. And that'll lead to better results in those relays.
And we're doing pretty well in them as well. But it's just a matter of fine tuning a few things on that. Field events, I know was something you thought had a chance to be a pretty big strength.
And so far, I know limited amount of meats you've been able to be a part of, but the field eventers really look like they're rounding into form.
And I think they're going to be a fun, fun group to watch, not just if we're talking throws, but if we're talking the jumps as to Bill, you got a chance you're going to be putting up some points before you even have kids that are that are on the track running.
Yeah, we did that last year too. But I think this year we might even do a little bit better in that area. Our long jumpers, Taylor Arendale, Hallie Bailey, they're coming along and continue to improve.
And our throwers, you know, are consistent as they were last year when we were at Bondurant, Jen Lamar through 39-6 in the shot. So that's that puts her at number two on the boom list for all times.
So she's getting up there and may continue to score points for us in those events. So it's nice to see and have those before we get started on the track. Well, I know that I pretty much know the answer to this, Bill, but it would be let's get a full track meet in.
But what are some things you're looking forward to here in the next couple of weeks? What do you want to see from the girls as we hopefully, I'm knocking on wood, I'm crossing fingers, I'm doing all the stuff for you here.
But what do you want to see the girls kind of take steps forward to here as we move through the month and get to the month of April? Yeah, I think we need to get our sprint relays a little bit more focused.
Four by one, for example, is one that we need to get a little bit more opportunities at and get our handoffs cleaned up. Four by two kind of as well. And then I think that sprint medley, we need to focus on where we can go with that.
You know, we talked about the four by eight and the distance medley were okay there. And we just need to get to get the lineups kind of set for that. So looking forward to getting back on the track.
Hopefully, a good two opportunities this week at Madrid this coming week at Madrid on Tuesday, and then Ogden on Thursday. So looking forward to those opportunities and close to home too. You never hate those, do you? Right? Yeah. Very much so.
Bill, as always, thank you so much for some time. Best of luck in getting ready for these meets. And we'll talk to you again here a couple of weeks. All right. Thanks, Ryan. Appreciate it. You bet. Bill Castle again, joining us. Boom Girls Track here on Coaches Corner.
