Behn Announces Plans to Retire

BOONE, Iowa—State Senator Jerry Behn, Republican from Boone, announced late last week that he will not be seeking re-election to the Iowa Senate.  Behn says he will retire when his sixth term comes to an end the end of this year.

The 65-year old Behn was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 1996 after serving one-year as a member of the Boone County Board of Supervisors.  He was last elected in 2016 when he defeated Kieth Puntenney in the Iowa State Senate District 24 General Election.  The 24th District includes Boone, Greene and Hamilton Counties and includes a portion of southeastern Webster County.

During his time in the Senate, Behn has served as the Republican leader and is currently the President Pro Temp.  He serves as a Vice-Chairman on the Senate Ethics Committee.  He also holds seats on the Education, Rules and Administration, Natural Resources and Ways and Means Committees.

Behn is also a member of the Farm Bureau, Iowa Soybean Association, National Rifle Association and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.
