The Boone baseball team walked off Humboldt, 3-2, in 11 thrilling innings Wednesday, July 16, at Memorial Park in Boone to earn a trip to the Class 3A state tournament next week.
Boone and Humboldt each scored a run in the second inning.
From there, the game remained scoreless until the 11th, when Humboldt scratched across a run in the top half of the inning.
But Boone wasn’t done.
In the bottom of the 11th, the Toreadors rallied.
Drew Hayworth and Reid Carr each came around to score, capping a dramatic two-run inning that sealed Boone’s return to the state tournament.
For the Toreadors, Cole Bowers had 2 hits and 1 run scored, and Dylan England recorded 2 hits and 1 RBI.
Luke Moore and Tyler Lindahl each had 2 hits while Noah Davies and Ryan Bowers pounded 1 hit each.
Starting pitcher Carr was a workhorse, throwing 9 innings with 2 strikeouts, while Lindahl earned the win in relief, striking out 3 over 2 innings.
Boone improves to 23-9 while Humboldt ends its season at 27-7.
Boone, the No. 8 seed, will face top-seeded Dubuque Wahlert Catholic (36-6) in the Class 3A state quarterfinals on Monday, July 21, at Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City.
